About Us

Strategy 2030

The Film and TV Charity has been supporting the UK’s film, TV, and cinema workers since 1924 – but the past 5 years have seen a rapid transformation of the Charity as we’ve begun revitalised our mission and radically scale our ambition to deliver high impact for our 200,000 beneficiaries.

Alex Pumfrey joined as CEO in late 2017, and in 2018 we created the Film and TV Support Line in response to the needs of our beneficiaries amid revelations of abuse that had been occurring in our industry. In 2019 we began to investigate the mental health and wellbeing of the industry, and the following year, alongside our response to the Covid emergency, we launched a major programme of work to address the industry’s mental health crisis – the Whole Picture Programme – which defines our brand and focus today.

In April 2020 we refreshed our charitable objects which now explicitly require us to promote both wellbeing and equality, diversity and inclusion:

In April 2021 the Board approved Strategy 2030, an ambitious plan to build a fairer and happier industry for all, while creating a financially sustainable organisation able to serve the industry for another 100 years.

The first stage of Strategy 2030 is the delivery of four stretching objectives by 2025:

  1. Building a representative team and inclusive culture which leads industry wellbeing measures;
  2. Supporting at least 15,000 people each year in ways that deliver scale, quality and value;
  3. Partnering for change, building at least 100 partnerships which can drive systems change right across the industry; and
  4. Delivering at least £2.5m per year in fundraising income, which together with our investment income can support a £3.5m scaled organisation.

We are making excellent progress towards these goals and are projecting to serve 11,000 people and fundraise £1.5m by the end of 2022/3 – but the plan nonetheless represents significant growth in our scale, impact, and income in the next 3 years.

Our upcoming priorities for 2023/4 include:

  • Optimising our current services, systems, processes, and culture;
  • Accelerating our digital transformation;
  • Launching our Anti-Racism ‘Impact Partnership Programme’, a proposal for investing in Black, Asian and minority ethnic organisations, community leaders and activists working in film and TV; and
  • Embedding our anti-discriminatory work.

What We Do

We work in two complementary ways: our direct support of individuals, and partnering to create the systems change that can improve work in the industry.

For our direct support of individuals, we deliver integrated and holistic financial, mental, and social wellbeing support in dynamic new ways that are in-step with the needs of our industry’s fast-changing workforce, focussed on helping those from under-represented groups who may face higher barriers to progress and thrive in the industry.

But to create wider and structural change for our beneficiaries we engage with partners right across the industry – from community groups to the largest corporates and the industry bodies – to help catalyse better working practices, better cultures, and more support. We are a relatively small organisation, but by joining forces with others we can have a big impact.

Our Values

  1. WE SEE THE WHOLE PERSON. Every individual has their lives and experiences. We work from a place of humanity.
  2. WE ACT WITH EMPATHY AND RESPECT. We oppose all forms of inequality and discrimination. We offer support not judgment.
  3. WE LISTEN AND GROW. We are guided by our beneficiaries who inspire us to persist and achieve more.
  4. WE WORK WITH POSITIVE ENERGY. We are motivated by our potential to improve the working lives of our beneficiaries. We engage practically to create change.

Who We Are

Our Board of Trustees

Our Board is made up of 12 Trustees representing lived experience of work in the industry, as well as expertise in areas including social care, clinical services, finance, the law, fundraising, HR and investment management.

The current Interim Chair is Andrew Wilson-Mouasher, who succeeded Cameron Saunders as the previous Interim Chair. The previous permanent Chair, John Pike, stepped back in late 2021.

Trustees serve up to three terms of three years each, and attend four half-day Board meetings a year as well as one full-day strategy awayday.

The Charity currently operates three committees:

  • The Finance Committee;
  • The Appointments and Remuneration Committee; and
  • The Inclusivity Committee.

The Chair is expected to be a member of all Committees.

Our Executive Team

The Executive Team comprises the Development Director, Director of Impact and Innovation and the Finance and Operations Director (who also acts as Company Secretary) in addition to the CEO.

Alex Pumfrey has recently announced that she will be stepping down after 5 years in the role.

The staff team numbers approximately 35 and is based in our HQ on Golden Square in Soho, London. We have staff based across the country and bases in Wales and the South-West, and in Scotland also covering Northern Ireland.

The Charity benefits from Royal Patronage, and Her Late Majesty The Queen was our Patron. We are currently awaiting confirmation of the new Patron.

Our Finances

The past 4 years have seen significant investment in the Charity’s modernisation, in order to achieve a financially sustainable organisation.

We are working to a rolling three-year financial plan to 2025/6 which seeks to achieve £2.5m in fundraising income supplemented by £1m in investment income to match a £3.5m expenditure model for the Charity by 2025/6, retaining the Charity’s reserves within the £10-15 million range.
