Job Title: Head of Department – Innovation and Management

Service: Royal Docks School of Business and Law

Responsible for: The staff of the department

 

JOB PURPOSE:

Lead and manage the department so that it realises its potential and delivers excellence in the full portfolio of academic programmes and activities, within the context of the operation and strategic development of the Department and School. To be part of the school leadership team.

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Key Tasks

  • Contribute to the formation of strategy and plans for the Department and School, through engagement with the Dean of School and colleague;
  • Ensure delivery of the Department’s contribution to University and School strategic plans;
  • Support and develop academic leadership in the department and wider community.
  • Ensure full compliance and exceeding the threshold of the regulatory bodies (such as OfS) across the department subjects;
  • Effective management of all staff in the Department to ensure excellent teaching and learning as well as research and enterprise;
  • Responsible for Assessment in the Department Area (examinations, coursework, etc.);
  • Responsible for responding to External Examiners’ comments and reports and for nominating appropriate Department Area external examiners for consideration for appointment;
  • Responsible for quality assurance, enhancement and standards in the Department Area;
  • Ensure that all teaching is timetabled within agreed guidelines;
  • Appropriately and effectively manage the Departmental budgets;
  • Ensure that Health, Safety and Environmental practice in the Department complies with University policy and regulations;
  • Ensure effective representation of the Department’s interests within and outside the University;
  • Ensure that the activities of the Department are undertaken in accordance with the governance, policy and regulatory frameworks of the University;
  • Actively promoting equality and diversity, in accordance with UEL’s equality and diversity policies;
  • Liaise with professional bodies and other outside organisations as required by the Dean of School;
  • Any other duties appropriate to the role, as designated by the Dean of School or the Provost.
