About BAFTA

BAFTA is a member organisation. BAFTA members form a unique community of creatives and professionals worldwide who support our mission to champion creativity and share our vision for a more inclusive, sustainable industry.

Our expert membership helps BAFTA to deliver its vision by sharing their knowledge, helping us to identify those with talent, and working collectively to drive change within our industries.

Members enjoy a programme of learning events, voting for our awards, networking opportunities, as well as a host of other benefits and offers.

BAFTA plays a major role in supporting the next generation of film, games and TV talent, through various initiatives such as:

  • BAFTA Elevate, an established year-long programme of bespoke support and activity, this year it is open to producers (scripted and non-scripted) working in film and television who are disabled, from minority ethnic backgrounds and from low-socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • For emerging and mid-level professionals, BAFTA Connect, is a new discounted tier of membership that will provide an opportunity to build a professional network and access BAFTA’s membership benefits at an earlier career stage.
  • Prince William BAFTA Bursary fund is aimed at talented individuals who, due to financial reasons, would otherwise not be able to pursue careers in the screen industries.
  • BAFTA Breakthrough showcases and supports the next generation of creative talent in film, games and television in the UK, India and the US.

These initiatives are informed by ongoing research which points to the importance of financial support, guidance and peer to peer networking in early career stages and across all crafts and departments in the film, games and televisions industries.

BAFTA’s Vision

We inspire new and unheard voices to become the future of the film, games and television industries, we support talented people from all backgrounds to help them achieve their potential, we advocate progressive industry and cultural change, and we amplify and celebrate excellence across the screen industries.

BAFTA’s aims

To champion the art and the craft, champion talent and champion the industry environment by:

  • identifying and celebrating industry practice deemed exceptional by peer review, thereby elevating the art and craft of film, games and TV;
  • providing talent with recognition, inspiration, access and long-term support, in particular those under-represented and underprivileged in society;
  • enabling a positive and inclusive environment, for an accessible, sustainable and connected industry.

Why is BAFTA recruiting this crucial role now?

Following the resignation of BAFTA’s longstanding Chief Executive Officer, Amanda Berry, this is a pivotal time for our industries and for BAFTA.

For the screen industries, with the challenges of coronavirus, the demand for a diverse workforce and inclusive industry culture, and the ambition of the screen industries to play a major role in the journey. BAFTA’s purpose and responsibilities are changing. BAFTA is determined to be leading and championing these cultural changes within the Academy and in the wider industry as well as engaging, informing and inspiring the public. A recent example of this is the comprehensive BAFTA Awards Review, which began as a direct response to the lack of diversity in the 2020 Film Awards nominations, but its remit soon expanded to encompass all aspects of BAFTA. The changes signal the beginning of a significant cultural shift in BAFTA as it also challenges the industry to address the serious lack of opportunity and equality.

Another important topic is national relevance and BAFTA’s role in celebrating excellence, and championing creativity across the whole of the UK, and internationally.

Sustainability has never been more relevant or more high profile than now – BAFTA has led and facilitated the TV Consortium, albert, since its conception nearly a decade ago. albert aims to enable every part of the screen industry to eliminate waste and carbon emissions from production whilst empowering industry creatives to make editorial content that supports a vision for a sustainable future.
