The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) was formed in 2018 and is made up of four distinctive schools: Life Sciences, Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Westminster Law School. We are located in the Fitzrovia district of central London, surrounded by hospitals and leading health institutions as much as by dynamic creative and media industries. Our undergraduate and postgraduate courses capitalise on our enviable location, and our students get to experience all that central London has to offer, both in what we study and through career-changing internships and placements.
The really big challenges of our time concern health and wellbeing, the structure of our society, international understanding and the place of humanity in the world. These are precisely the issues our colleagues and our students work together to explore, as articulated in our 2022-2029 College Strategy. We are a community aware of our responsibility to understand the world around us more fully so that it can be a better place for us and for future generations.
We are a community of researchers as well as teachers and learners, and Liberal Arts and Sciences is home to 8 of the 13 units of assessment submitted to REF2021. Major research centres in the College include the Centres for Optimal Health, for Resilience, for Nutraceuticals, the Centre for the Study of Democracy, and the Centre for Law, Society & Popular Culture.
The College is a large and diverse academic family from all over the world, consisting of around 400 colleagues, over 5700 undergraduates as well as 1300 Master’s and 200 PhD students, supported by a budget of £71 million. It is also a safe and supportive place to try out and share new ideas and insights.
