Role Description

The Royal Hospital Chelsea is a historic institution providing sheltered accommodation (Long Wards), residential and full nursing care where necessary (the Margaret Thatcher Infirmary) for some 300 retired soldiers, known as In-Pensioners.  It ensures Army veterans are provided with the support and comradeship they need in recognition of their service to the Nation and safeguards their historic home for the veterans of tomorrow.

Role Purpose:

The primary areas of accountability and responsibility for this role include maintaining and improving the health and wellbeing of In Pensioners through the provision of effective high-quality health, care, support, accommodation, leisure, ceremonial, and meaningful activity services for older military Veterans. This includes providing regulatory and legal compliance and assurance and a lead role in ensuring safeguarding policy and practice is of the highest standard.

Principal Accountabilities: 8-10 outcomes

Principal Tasks

  • To collaborate with the Executive Board members on the development and implementation of policy and strategies for the Royal Hospital, and on effective and efficient operational and resource management with particular responsibility for the Health and Wellbeing of In Pensioners.
  • To take the lead role on behalf of the Executive Board and the hospital in adult and children’s safeguarding.
  • Liaison, negotiation, and collaboration with other Executive Board members when required to ensure the right services and resources are applied to In Pensioner Health and Wellbeing to deliver good outcomes.
  • To provide leadership to and exercise oversight of those charged with the management of services to the In Pensioner community, ensuring that best practice and the required service culture is maintained.
  • To ensure that the recruitment and retention of In Pensioners sustains the population and maintains the required balance.
  • To participate in effective coordination of activities across the RHC, in order that these reinforce its core function and enhance the health and wellbeing of In Pensioners and the reputation of the Royal Hospital Chelsea.
  • To ensure there is sound policy and practice relating to the consultation with, and involvement of, In Pensioners in the life of the Hospital and decision-making processes, and that such activities are effectively coordinated.
  • To ensure internal communications with In Pensioners are effective.
  • To ensure that the information regarding In Pensioner service activity, performance and compliance is comprehensive, accurate, relevant and up to date for all services.
  • Developing and managing effectively the budget for the Department and participating in Fundraising to support bids for related activity.
  • Responsible for maintaining the links to the military to ensure relationships are strong and productive and in the best interests of In Pensioners and the Royal Hospital.
  • Responsibility for contributing to an up to date, dynamic and effective RHC risk register and business continuity plan (including the emergency plan).
  • Participating in PR and communications work as relevant and requested, particularly in relation to In Pensioners and their Health and Wellbeing.
  • Through the existing staff ensure the military culture and values are maintained in the day-to-day practices at the RHC.
  • Ensure the RHC develops and maintains the impact of our services to Pensioners and oversee any relevant research and evaluation.
  • Accountable for the delivery and development of military veteran outreach.

The Director of Health & Wellbeing is expected to:

  • Act as a member of the Executive Board and provide high calibre leadership in Health and Wellbeing across the organisation where required
  • Lead the Health and Wellbeing Directorate in pursuit of performance excellence
  • Lead the delivery of high-quality Safeguarding policy and practice in line with all legal and regulatory requirements of relevant legislation.
