Welcome

Dear Candidate,

Thank you for your interest in our post of Director of Health & Wellbeing. This amazing opportunity arises out of the departure of our Director, Professor Deborah Sturdy OBE, who has left to take up the role of the first Chief Nurse for Adult Social Care in England.

The core mission of the Royal Hospital Chelsea is to provide excellent care to some 300 British Army veterans and enable them to live lives which are as fulfilling as possible. This is the primary responsibility for this role. Our history, military ethos, and tradition of comradeship contribute to making the Royal Hospital Chelsea a unique establishment which our staff our proud to be part of.  The wonderful daily engagement with the Chelsea Pensioners and hearing about their experiences makes this role truly exceptional.

Our vision is to remain a much valued and loved national institute, providing the highest standards of support to the Army veteran community. We have a holistic integrated model of housing, care, support, medical services, and welfare which this Director will successfully administer. We are very proud to have been judged Outstanding by the CQC in our last two inspections, so there is a strong foundation on which to improve and develop the care and support we offer.

The Director of Health & Wellbeing plays a critical role in maintaining and developing the high quality of care offered to our Chelsea Pensioners. By regularly updating and renewing our model of care to meet current and future veterans’ needs, we envisage the Director will play a central role at the Royal Hospital.

Additionally, we are about to launch an exciting new outreach initiative working in partnership with other service charities which will coincide with our holistic model of care.

We are also hugely proud of our staff, who show such loyalty and dedication to the Chelsea Pensioners, especially during the recent pandemic. Each day they demonstrate our values by ‘respecting individuals’, ‘nurturing belonging’, ‘encouraging pride’ and ‘enjoying life’ in all aspects of their work. We are looking for an individual who embodies these values and can motivate and inspire our staff.

When you get to know us, I am sure you will be bowled over by the historic buildings and settings, the life of the community on site and most of all by the incredible character of the Chelsea Pensioners whom it is our honour to serve.

I look forward to reading your application.
