The Money Advice Trust is a leading debt advice charity, helping people across the UK to tackle their debts and manage money with confidence.
Founded in 1991, we are now one of the UK’s three main debt advice charities – with 300 people based in Birmingham and London, an annual income of £22 million and ambitions to expand further in the years ahead.
The debt advice we provide is free, independent and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. Our teams of advisers, based in our Birmingham contact centre, always act in the best interests of the people we help, and are highly regarded across the advice and credit sectors for their subject matter expertise. Our phone services are complemented by webchat and digital channels.
We use an ‘assisted self-help’ model – helping people to take control of their financial situation, and providing them with the information, skills and confidence to tackle their debts.
Uniquely, in addition to our frontline debt advice services we are also the sector’s main provider of debt adviser training – making us an even more essential part of the UK’s debt advice infrastructure. And our training and consultancy enterprise is the leading specialist provider of vulnerability training in the credit industry.
Our Services
We run National Debtline – which provides free, independent advice to people in debt by phone, webchat and online – and Business Debtline, the UK’s only free, dedicated debt advice service for small business owners.
Last year these award-winning debt advice services helped more than 127,000 people with free, expert advice – with 2.38 million annual visits to our advice websites.
As the impact of the cost of living crisis becomes fully felt, these services have never been more needed. In 2023 we commenced delivery of major new debt advice contracts with the Money and Pensions Service, through which we will help 440,000 people over the coming three years.
Beyond the frontline, we use our insight and evidence to improve policy for people in financial difficulty. Our highly-regarded influencing work has secured 54 changes to policy and practice over the last six years – and our agenda is growing.
Our Wiseradviser service trained 20,000 money advisers last year – and through our commercial training and consultancy service, we have trained and helped 6000 staff in more than 70 credit industry firms and other organisations to improve support and outcomes for customers in vulnerable circumstances.
After three decades of making a difference, the Money Advice Trust is now entering a new and exciting phase of growth – reaching more people, harnessing the power of new technology and developing new partnerships across the UK.
