Trustee Role Profile – Global South Social Change

In addition to the generic duties of a voluntary Board Member, we are looking for our Trustee with expertise in Social Change in the Global South to:   

  • Ensure that we are tapping into the latest thinking and best practice around social change in the Global South and how we can best support and drive it.  
  • Provide advice and assurance to Trustees on our approach to social change, working closely with the Executive Team and as part of the Social Impact Committee.  
  • Support in the development of effective relationships with senior stakeholders from, for example, institutional grant givers, governments, civil society, the private sector, the media, and/or opinion formers.  
  • Contribute to our overall social change strategy, ensuring that Comic Relief is an effective partner to the communities it works with and serves.  
  • Act as an authentic ambassador for Comic Relief.  

Experience and personal attributes we’re looking for:  

Essential  

  • A commitment to and passion for Comic Relief’s vision of a just world free from poverty.  
  • Substantial knowledge and experience of working in social change across the Global South with demonstrable impact. Social change can have been driven through grant giving, programme implementation, digital innovation, influencing policy makers, grassroots mobilisation, or other means. 
  • An understanding of the issues and challenges for UK-based charities driving social change across the UK and the Global South, with a viewpoint on reform and transformation of the sector.  
  • Knowledge of how culture can drive social change, ideally with demonstrable experience of doing so. 
  • Excellent networking, influencing, and communication skills.  
  • An evidenced commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion.  
  • Independence, sound judgement, an ability to speak one’s mind, and an appreciation of the critical role a Board plays, both in and outside Comic Relief. 

 Desirable 

  • Located in the Global South.
  • Knowledge and experience of driving social change through means other than grant giving.
  • First-hand experience of receiving and implementing funds in the Global South, and/or distributing funds in the Global South.
