Role Description – Chief Executive

Salary: £85,000 pa (pro rata)
Reports to:  Chair of trustees
Line manager for: Head of finance and operations, head of membership and marketing,
head of influencing, head of business development, head of member support

Overview of the role

You will be responsible for the leadership, strategic direction and management of ACEVO, where you will deliver ACEVO’s mission of inspiring and supporting civil society leaders to make the biggest possible difference.

You will lead and convene our community, establishing and maintaining relationships with our increasing membership base and valued sector partners and creating an inspiring, safe and supportive space for CEOs to share, learn and grow.

You will be a passionate advocate for our members and the sector, and represent ACEVO and its membership to the sector, media, government and other key influencers.

You will lead our small but effective staff team, line managing the senior management team and bringing our organisational values to life in what you say and do, maintaining our fun and supportive culture.

You will relish the challenges of heading up a small organisation which delivers a big impact, combining strategic thinking with a hands-on and entrepreneurial approach to maintaining our high level of member engagement and positive financial trajectory.

Role description

Imagine – with our members, imagine a better world

  • Paint a bold and ambitious picture of what society, the sector and its leaders could look like
  • Lead, execute, enhance and champion ACEVO’s strategy and direction
  • Represent the experiences, needs and collective impact of the sector to those with the ability to make positive changes for our sector and those we serve
  • Strengthen and deepen collective work with civil society infrastructure bodies to deliver cross-sector shared objectives
  • Lead from the front in promoting, modelling, measuring and supporting best practice in equity, diversity and inclusion and workplace cultures for a safer, more equitable sector

Inspire – inspire our members, and help them inspire each other and the people they serve

  • Ensure delivery of an outstanding membership offer for chief executives
  • Bring more charity and social enterprise leaders into ACEVO membership and support and inspire them at every step of their social leadership journey
  • Lead and inspire our management and staff team and ensure the high-quality delivery of operational plans

Improve – deliver impact to improve lives, improve society and ACEVO’s own performance

  • Be accountable for the delivery of ACEVO’s operational plans, ensuring high-quality delivery in a culture of learning and improvement
  • Hold overall responsibility for ACEVO’s financial wellbeing, ensuring all systems, processes and controls are in place for robust management of ACEVO’s resources
  • Champion, enable and serve good governance at ACEVO, working closely with the chair of trustees
  • Ensure ACEVO members have access to high quality leadership development to continually improve their own practice and performance
  • Use your commercial acumen to identify and explore opportunities for organisational growth and service development

Benefits

Hours: We welcome applications from people seeking flexible working, including job-share applicants. The current post-holder works 35 hours a week and we do see this as a full time role, but we are open to conversations about flexible hours.

Place of work: ACEVO currently operates a hybrid model, with most staff members enjoying a mixture of home working and meeting in our office space in Aldgate, east London. Candidates may be based anywhere in the UK, but there will be expectation of some travel into London, ideally for at least one or two days a week.

Holiday: 25 days per year (pro rata) plus three company days and eight bank holidays. Our holiday year runs from 1 April to 31 March.

Pension: You will be automatically enrolled in the ACEVO group personal pension scheme on completion of three months’ employment unless you choose to opt out. ACEVO will pay an amount equal to 6% of your basic salary to the scheme provided that your contribution is at least 3% of your salary.

Development: All staff members are offered a personal training budget, plus the opportunity to have a mentor or coach to help them achieve their personal development goals.
