Welcome

Thank you for your interest in becoming a trustee at War Child UK.

War Child is the only specialist protection agency for children in war, and there really has never been a more important time to support our work as a trustee.

From the moment I joined our board, two things struck me as immediately true.

First, the scale and urgency of why we’re here. Right now, one in five children worldwide – 520 million – live in conflict-affected areas; a number that has more than doubled since the 1990s when War Child was founded. These are not just abstract statistics. These figures represent a generation of real children growing up with deep psychological wounds, disrupted educations and uncertain futures.

Second, the culture of this organisation. War Child runs on a rare combination of real rigour and agile creativity, both delivered with nothing but courage and joy.

Our mission is to ensure a safe future for every child affected by war. To achieve this, our role here in the UK is two-fold:

  • Supercharging our fundraising growth, to enable our colleagues and partners to reach more children in conflict zones with our evidence-based support programmes
  • Advocating with governments to better protect children in war

This year sees us embark on a new five-year strategy. A clear-eyed response to escalating conflicts and global aid shocks, it sets out the sector-leading role War Child UK must continue to play with a new fundraising framework, ambitious goals on income and advocacy, and strategic choices designed to deepen our iconic relationships with the creative arts and further empower our people & culture.

I’m looking for trustees who bring the full depth and breadth of their experience, ask the questions that matter to support our leadership team, and commit wholeheartedly to the cause. We have a skilled, diverse and collaborative board already. We want to make it even stronger. You will find the specific skills and backgrounds we are looking for in the role description.

If this sounds like your kind of organisation, please do apply. We look forward to hearing from you.

Chair, Board of Trustees, War Child UK
