Performing this Role

In carrying out this role a Trustee must act honestly and reasonably in the best interests of The Road Safety Trust, avoiding any conflict of interest and behaving in line with the organisation’s values. In addition, each Trustee should use any specific skills, knowledge or experience they have to help the Board of Trustees reach sound decisions.

This may involve:

  • Scrutinising board papers
  • Leading discussions
  • Focusing on key issues
  • Providing guidance on new initiatives
  • Other matters in which the Trustee has special expertise.

Terms of position

  • The position of Trustee is unpaid.
  • Necessary travel expenses to and from board and committee meetings will be reimbursed on application.
  • The term of office for Trustees is three years. A Trustee is eligible for re-election by the members for one further term of three years. After a Trustee has served two consecutive terms in office, they are eligible for re-election only after a year has elapsed since they retired as Trustee, unless the Board considers it would be in the best interests of the charity for a Trustee to be eligible for re-election on their retirement for such number of further terms as the Trustees resolve and such re-election is approved by a resolution of the members.

Managing Conflicts of Interest and/or Conflicts of Loyalty

RST accepts that Trustees are also associated with, or employed by, prospective applicants to the Trust’s grants, due to their level of skills and relevant experience in road safety research or interventions. This is managed carefully by RST policies.
