Welcome Letter – Tony Fuller, Chair of The Road Safety Trust

Dear Applicant,

Thank you for your interest in the role of Trustee at The Road Safety Trust.

As the UK’s largest independent grant-funding body dedicated to road safety initiatives, The Road Safety Trust plays a vital role in supporting evidence-led interventions, research, education, and advocacy aimed at reducing harm on our roads.

Our work is made possible through the commitment and expertise of our Board of Trustees, who provide strategic guidance, ensure strong governance, and uphold the financial stewardship necessary to secure the Trust’s sustainability. Their leadership is instrumental in ensuring we have the vision, accountability, and resources to achieve our objectives.

Through this recruitment campaign, we are seeking to appoint new Trustees with expertise in finance management, governance and risk, communications, or road safety who can contribute meaningfully to our three committees: The Audit and Risk Committee, The Road Safety Initiatives Committee and The Communications and Engagement Committee.

We value diversity in all its forms and welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds. We particularly encourage those from underrepresented groups to apply. More than any specific professional experience, we are looking for individuals who bring curiosity, integrity, and a willingness to contribute to effective decision-making. A broad and inclusive range of perspectives on our Board will strengthen our ability to deliver on our vision: a future in which there are zero road deaths and serious injuries on UK roads.

Since assuming the role of Chair in 2020, I have found the opportunity to contribute to such a meaningful cause both fulfilling and motivating. I firmly believe that you will find the role of Trustee intellectually engaging and personally rewarding. Your time, expertise, and insight will be deeply valued as we continue to grow and evolve as an organisation.

Thank you once again for your interest. I look forward to receiving your application.

Tony Fuller

Introduction to The Road Safety Trust – Ruth Purdie, CEO The Road Safety Trust

The Road Safety Trust is an independent grant-giving trust which supports projects and research to make UK roads safer for all road users.

In addition to being appointed CEO of The Road Safety Trust in 2023, I am also the CEO of UKROEd, the not-for-profit trading subsidiary company wholly owned by The Road Safety Trust. UKROEd is responsible for the operation of the National Driver Offender Retraining Scheme (NDORS), with all surplus funds from the scheme directed to The Trust.

Being in the privileged position of simultaneously overseeing both companies has afforded me the ability to see first-hand how the courses delivered by UKROEd – which are underpinned by the latest behavioural research and proven to positively influence road users’ behaviour – also facilitate the delivery of worthwhile projects via The Trust to make our roads safer.

Secondly, we support road policy advocacy, through our partnership with the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (PACTS).

This is what motivates me each day and I welcome the valuable contribution from the new Trustees.
