The Board Chair leads the Board in overseeing the implementation of RICS’ strategic objectives, monitoring organisational performance, financial sustainability and strategic risk, and ensuring that appropriate governance, controls and culture are in place to support the Institution’s objectives. They are responsible for fostering open and effective debate, providing support and challenge to the Executive, and ensuring the Board operates efficiently and in accordance with its remit.
A key aspect of the role is building strong and transparent relationships across the governance framework, including Governing Council, the Standards and Regulation Board and the Board Committees. The Board Chair represents the Board to Governing Council, helps resolve matters escalated by Board Committees, and supports effective collaboration between governance bodies and the Executive.
The Board Chair also leads the development and effectiveness of the Board itself, including Board composition, succession planning, performance evaluation and the induction and development of Board members. Working closely with the Chief Executive and Head of Governance, they shape the Board’s agenda and ensure appropriate focus on strategy, performance, risk and organisational priorities.
Externally, the Board Chair represents RICS, championing the Institution’s purpose, values and public interest responsibilities. They help position RICS as a leading voice across the built and natural environment while promoting key priorities such as professional excellence, diversity and inclusion, sustainability, innovation and technology.
The successful candidate will be an influential and collaborative leader, bringing sound judgment, strong governance experience and a commitment to advancing the profession and serving the public interest.
