Welcome

Thank you for your interest in the role of Executive Director of Finance within the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s (NMC) Finance Directorate.

As the largest professional regulator in the world, responsible for the registration of more than 867,000 nurses, midwives and nursing associates in the UK, whose commitment and expertise are fundamental to the wellbeing of people and communities across all four nations, we have a critical role in protecting the public, promoting confidence in the nursing and midwifery professions and upholding the standards of proficiency.

You will be joining at a pivotal moment of change and transformation as we continue with the important task of building a new, stronger and fit for the future NMC, with fairness and equity at the heart of everything we do.

Whilst there is still much to do to transform the NMC, a great deal has already been delivered across culture, regulation and education and standards, including:

  • Publishing our new NMC strategy which sets out our ambitions up until 31 March 2027.
  • Launching our three-year Culture Transformation Plan, to help us build a culture that’s positive, empowering and inclusive.
  • Rolling out our new organisational values of Integrity, Fairness, Respect, Equity and Effectiveness.
  • Expanding our Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) focus and ambitions, including the development of five key EDI targets.
  • Setting out our new Midwifery Action Plan, to ensure safe, equitable and person-centred maternity care and education.
  • Ending a year of progress in Fitness to Practise (FtP) with cases being resolved at the fastest rate in nearly five years.

This is a pivotal moment for our organisation and an exciting opportunity for an outstanding individual to join the leadership of the NMC to shape our work and culture. Our Executive Directors of Finance and Transformation and Technology Services both play a pivotal role in this.

The NMC has faced a difficult period following the publication of the Independent Culture Review by Nazir Afzal and Rise Associates. however, we have made progress since then including publishing our culture transformation plan which will guide how work as an organisation in the years ahead. We are also embarking on an ambitious programme to modernise how we regulate, with major reforms to our underpinning legislation coming in the next few years.

This is a chance to join the Executive Board of an organisation with a great purpose and to work alongside dedicated colleagues and stakeholders who want the NMC to improve and succeed so that safe, effective care is what people experience every day.

We are looking for someone with the vision, integrity and ability to inspire others and lead effective change. You will understand the critical role of regulation in protecting the public and promoting professionalism and you will be able to confidently navigate the fast-changing, complex environment of health and care.

If you share our commitment to protecting the public and advancing nursing and midwifery, we look forward to hearing from you.

Paul Rees,
Chief Executive Officer
