Welcome

Created in 1981 by London Marathon co-founders Chris Brasher and John Disley, The London Marathon Charitable Trust (LMCT) is one of the UK’s major charitable funders of initiatives to support people to lead active and healthy lives.

LMCT is the parent charity of its trading subsidiary, London Marathon Events (LME) and both organisations share a mission to Inspire Activity. To fulfil this mission, LMCT funds projects to inspire activity, and LME inspires activity by organising world-leading mass participation sporting events including the iconic TCS London Marathon – the largest annual fundraising event on the planet, which has seen participants raise more than £1 billion for good causes since it began in 1981. As LMCT is the parent charity of LME, LMCT’s Board of Trustees are ultimately responsible for both organisations. We are proud that LMCT provides clear and identifiable benefits to the general public by funding initiatives that enable people to become and remain physically active regardless of age, gender, ability, race or background, and that LMCT’s performance and achievements demonstrate tangible results in these areas. LMCT ensures that, as a condition of its grant agreements, all funded projects are accessible to and affordable for the public.

It’s an incredibly exciting time for LMCT, having recently finalised a new organisational strategy which prioritises inspiring activity for children and young people and increasing participation in physical activity for marginalised groups and communities. Through this new strategy, LMCT aims to support those who may need the most help to be active, so that many more people can lead active and healthy lives – continuing the legacy of our co-founders.

We are also on the cusp of reaching a significant funding milestone, and next year expect to have awarded £100 million to projects in London and across the UK since our founding in 1981 – a milestone we will certainly be celebrating throughout 2023! Looking ahead, LME’s ambitions for the next five years include increasing the income delivered to LMCT, which would enable us to grow our funding and support many more projects that fit with our new organisational strategy.

Having been through an extensive Governance Review this year, we are now seeking to diversify and refresh our Board and are looking for new Trustees to provide strategic direction to the Charity and oversight of LME.  Trustees are expected to offer scrutiny and challenge to the staff team in order to ensure that LMCT fulfils our duty to our beneficiaries through high impact funding and grantmaking and that we deliver on our vision, mission and values.

The Board is supported by three Committees

  • Finance & Audit Committee.
  • Grants Committee.
  • Governance & Nominations Committee.

Trustees are expected to serve on one of the Committees.

We are looking for a Trustee to chair our Finance & Audit Committee so we are specifically looking for an experienced finance professional, ideally with charitable finance and/or investment experience.

If you are interested in making a difference to inspire activity and can contribute strategically on a wide range of issues and demonstrate empathy with the aims and objectives of LMCT, please see further information on this microsite.
