Purpose of the role
The Executive Director of UK Operations leads the UK operations directorate – a dispersed group of 2400 staff and
9,000 volunteers operating across multiple sites in the UK – to deliver positive impact for people in crisis through a mix
of place and regional based partnerships and national products and services. Ensures the impact of our services
occurs in those communities where the risks are greatest and health inequality most pronounced – as part of our
integrated, caused based strategy. Accountable for creating and delivering relevant, consistent and clear service
delivery models. Professional lead for standards, practice and quality assurance in UK service delivery.
Key responsibilities (three levels of responsibility)
1. Collective Leadership of BRC organisational priorities
- Responsible for providing clear and focused leadership of the whole organisation to protect the BRC’s
fundamental principles and values and ensure financial sustainability - Responsible for playing a corporate role in delivering the BRC Corporate 2030 Strategy and supporting the
CEO and other Executive Directors in implementing the strategies and policies of the Board of Trustees - Oversee and ensure the effectiveness of the Society’s risk management systems, practices and
procedures - To take cabinet responsibility in communicating corporate decisions made in ELT or the Board irrespective of
personal views - Play a key part in leading the organisational change agenda and translating the implications for delivery within the UK Operations Directorate
2. Portfolio Leadership
- To own and lead the delivery of a cross-organisational objective on behalf of Executive Leadership Team and
assume full accountability for successful outcomes i.e. risk management strategy and implementation

3. Executive Leadership of the Directorate
- Lead the development and delivery of high quality, person centred services, fully aligned with our 2030
strategy, enabled by data and insight and reflecting the diverse interests and concerns of service users and
communities most at risk - Provide active and strong people leadership to ensure the creation of a collaborative people culture with an
emphasis on diversity and inclusion, development, personal growth, team working, wellbeing and connectivity
with the wider BRC - Accountable for ensuring a cost-effective quality framework is in place for all our services, whether contracted
or self-funded - Ensure clear business and service models are in place and applied consistently across the UK that enable
cost recovery and income for UK Operations services unless there are compelling charitable reasons to
subsidise the service. - To develop greater consistency, cohesion and synergy across the UK ensuring our UK service offer is nationally
quality assured and locally tailored - Lead our partnerships with other organisations from whichever sector that can enable BRCS to maximise our impact
- In partnership, help position and represent BRC externally at the most influential levels necessary to help shape policy and attract significant donor support as part of creating the conditions for British Red Cross to succeed.
- Act as head of profession for operational delivery to ensure: a clear understanding of user need and amplify the user voice; development of best practice in service delivery; continuous improvement activity and exploitation of technology and partnership working to achieve strong outcomes
