Role Description

The Trustee Role

Art Fund is led by its Board of Trustees who are responsible for overall governance and strategic direction of the charity. Trustees also make decisions on grant applications from museums and galleries across the UK for acquisitions of works of art and for a range of other activities including curatorial and conservation programmes.

Being an Art Fund Trustee is a valuable and rewarding role and you will make an important contribution to our current work and future direction. In particular you will support us to implement our new five-year strategic vision to fund art, help to grow museum audiences and amplify the sector.

We are looking for four new Trustees.

All Trustees need to demonstrate a commitment to Art Fund’s strategic vision and at least one of our new Trustees will be a practising artist. Another will have expertise in applied arts and/or Renaissance and Old Masters. One Trustee will support the work of the Board by bringing experience and insights which will help to steer our strategy, improve our governance, and consider business continuity and risk. Another Trustee will bring experience of museum operations and the museum context, particularly leaders with operational and commercial expertise and knowledge of the current funding landscape.

Among new Trustee talents, we would ideally also like to find someone with contemporary skills in the application of digital technology and the opportunities it can present for museums activities. In addition, Trustees with experience in audience making, marketing and development would be welcome.
