What You Will Bring
We are looking for people with passion and expertise in one or more of the following areas that are central to our new, ambitious North Star strategy, in which we want to create a new future for children and young people with cancer.
This experience might come from a range of different types of background and roles including the third sector and other sectors. We are looking for people who can help us to:
- Shape the development and use of evidence and data including through technology;
- Influence and create systemic change. For example through building strategic partnerships and collaborations, or through policy and influencing;
- Become an organisation that is truly diverse, equitable and inclusive and where everyone belongs;
- Building entrepreneurial collaborations and partnerships across different sectors.
At Young Lives vs Cancer, we believe that our Board of Trustees should reflect the communities we serve. We recognise that opportunities for too many people remain a condition of their race, class, sex, disability, sexual orientation – or a combination of these factors. This has never been acceptable to us as an organisation. , We do not just accept difference — we value it, we celebrate it, we nurture it, and we thrive off it. We positively welcome your application irrespective of your background.
To be a Trustee you have to be over the age of 18. You’ll show commitment and passion for what we do and be willing to devote the time and energy needed to be a Trustee, but you do not need to have done it before or worked in another charity. You will show a willingness to understand and accept the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship but we can help you develop these skills.
You don’t need to have lots of experience in the following things, but it is important that you have the ability and enthusiasm to:
- Act as an ambassador for Young Lives vs Cancer and the children, young people and families we support
- Say what you think, especially when you disagree – showing sound, independent judgement – and encourage others to do the same
- See the big picture and think strategically
- Be part of a team.
You will live our values – being brave and confident, having integrity and being part of Team Young Lives – while bringing your own unique voice and self to the board.
The voices of children, young people and their families are at the centre of our organisation. While not an essential criteria, we encourage applications from candidates with lived experience of cancer in children and young people (for example as a child or young person, parent, carer or sibling).
We have just launched a new, ambitious strategy that is striving towards a North Star – a new future for children and young people with cancer that will only be achieved by wide system change. We are on a journey, and if you join us, you will be part of a community that is committed to creating a new future for children and young people with cancer.
