Person Specification

What You Will Bring

You will have passion and expertise and the ability to champion social work at Board level.

To be a Trustee you have to be over the age of 18. You’ll show commitment and passion for what we do and be willing to devote the time and energy needed to be a Trustee, but you do not need to have done it before or worked in another charity. You will show a willingness to understand and accept the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship but we can help you develop these skills.

You will:

  • Be currently working in a strategic or director role in a social work or relevant policy or academic role
  • Have experience as a Qualified Social Worker and have been registered with Social Work England, Social Care Wales, the Scottish Social Services Council or the Northern Ireland Social Care Council (we accept that this registration may not be current depending on the nature of your current role)
  • Have strategic knowledge / senior leadership experience of integrated models of health and social care, and safeguarding arrangements
  • Ideally – have experience in social work in the context of both the statutory and third sector
  • Have experience in system change or innovation models, including addressing equity
  • Have experience working closely with Government departments.

You don’t need to have lots of experience in the following things, but it is important that you have the ability and enthusiasm to:

  • Act as an ambassador for Young Lives vs Cancer and the children, young people and families we support
  • Say what you think, especially when you disagree – showing sound, independent judgement – and encourage others to do the same
  • See the big picture and think strategically
  • Be part of a team.

The voices of children, young people and their families are at the centre of our organisation. While not an essential criteria, we encourage applications from candidates with lived experience of cancer in children and young people (for example as a child or young person, parent, carer or sibling).
