Role Description – Executive Director, Technology and Change

Job Purpose

As a member of the Executive Leadership Team, the Executive Director for Technology and Change will play a pivotal role in driving transformation. They will be accountable for creating comprehensive technology, data and change management strategies which will be fully aligned with the business objectives and responsible for leading their teams to develop and deliver “best in class” solutions that enhance operational efficiency and service delivery. The jobholder will apply professional insight, vision and intellectual capability to shape and influence our member-centric approach, ensuring that we can predict and react to member needs and continue to champion the voice of the Profession and the public interest.

Shared Executive Leadership Team Accountabilities

  • Member of the Executive Leadership Team.
  • Work with Council, Board and the Executive Leadership Team colleagues to set the strategic direction of the LS, with a focus on member centricity and value.
  • Enthusiastically and energetically promote the work of the LS and its services, to provide cost-effective representation, reducing the LS dependence upon practising certificate fees whilst developing new and existing income channels to support the activities of the LS.
  • Ensure effective corporate functioning, development and governance, working closely and effectively with Council, Board colleagues and wider stakeholders.
  • Provide ‘cabinet’ and strategic thought leadership and function across the whole of the LS to secure our strategic integration and success.
  • Ensure effective and consistent delivery of strategic targets through the integrated Operational Director tier.
  • Drive a continuous quality improvement culture approach across the LS and support the effective management of change.
  • Build effective and influencing relationships outside the organisation with key stakeholders and opinion formers, to promote and strengthen the LS Brand.
  • Use professional expertise and networks to ensure the LS is aware of and adopts forward thinking and best practice.
  • Model the highest levels of effective leadership behaviours and our values to ensure the LS is a stimulating and rewarding place to work for all.

Functional Key Accountabilities

Strategy & Leadership

  • Develop and implement a forward-looking technology and change management strategy that aligns with the LS’s mission and long-term goals.
  • Ensure that technology initiatives are integrated with the broader business strategy to support the society’s strategic objectives.
  • Actively participate as a member of the executive team, providing technical expertise to shape business strategy.
  • Lead the development and delivery of a highly professional, customer orientated, innovative and cost-effective function, including the appointment and leadership of an effective, motivated and professional team.

Operational Excellence

  • Lead initiatives aimed at optimising technology operations, enhancing service delivery, and streamlining processes.
  • Implement systems to boost productivity, improve communication, and efficiently manage employee and member services.

Portfolio and Project Management

  • Establish and lead a Portfolio Management function that prioritises and manages technology and change initiatives across the organisation, ensuring strategic alignment and delivery excellence.

Change Management

  • Lead and drive change management capabilities across the organisation and ensure smooth adoption of any changes including technology changes and adoption.

Cybersecurity and Compliance

  • Develop and enforce robust cybersecurity measures and data governance frameworks to safeguard sensitive information.
  • Ensure full compliance with relevant regulations, including GDPR, and uphold the highest standards of data privacy and security.

Digital Transformation

  • Lead the digital transformation of the LS’s IT infrastructure and services.
  • Foster a culture of innovation, leveraging emerging technologies to enhance member engagement and improve service offerings.

IT Operations Management

  • Oversee IT operations and service delivery, ensuring high availability, reliability, and operational excellence.

Vendor Management

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with technology vendors and partners.
  • Ensure effective collaboration and continuously evaluate vendor performance to align with organisational goals and deliver optimal value.

Governance and Compliance

  • Develop, implement and enforce IT policies and procedures, to ensure full compliance with all relevant standards and regulations.

Operating environment: Approximately 420 employees across the Law Society: circa 60 colleagues in the Technology and Change function. Reports to the Chief Executive Officer.

Location: 113 Chancery Lane, London, WC2A 1PL with hybrid working.
