Person Specification – Chief Operating Officer

Experience, Knowledge & Qualifications

  • Qualified accountant (e.g., ACA, ACCA, CIMA).
  • Significant experience in leading finance teams in a complex organisation, ideally within the charity or public sector with income in excess of £20m per annum.
  • Experience managing multiple income streams (e.g. Grants, contracts including statutory funding, donations).
  • Experience managing and ensuring effective cost recovery in a complex and competitive funding environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of governance standards and safeguarding regulations, with demonstrable experience of working with Boards and Committees to ensure effective oversight, compliance, and continuous improvement.
  • Proven track record of leading corporate services functions (finance, IT, property, facilities, admin).
  • Experience in strategic project and programme management.
  • Strong understanding of property management, health & safety, and risk.
  • Ability to influence and advise senior colleagues and Board members.
  • Experience driving transformational and cultural change.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, both internal and external.
  • Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Governance experience, including Board reporting and external.
  • Experience of being responsible for a People team or directorate.
