Person Specification

We are seeking candidates who are passionate about, and committed to, our charitable purpose and mission in relation to helping people with problem debt.

We are looking for up to four trustees who could bring greater diversity of perspectives and experience to our Board which we believe will make us a stronger organisation and add to our decision-making processes.  We would particularly welcome applications from those with lived experience in relation to problem debt, either with or without direct or indirect experience of using a debt advisory service.*

We are seeking to recruit multiple trustees, and believe a board composed of individuals with different levels of experience allows us to best deliver to the people we serve. As such, we actively encourage applications from those seeking their first trustee position and will provide full induction, mentoring and support as required. We equally welcome applications from individuals with deeper non-executive director (NED) or executive experience and candidates who may have a potential interest in taking on chair, sub-committee chair or senior independent director responsibilities in due course.

We place considerable emphasis on diversity at Board level, and would particularly encourage applications from appropriately qualified candidates from all sections of the community, and from people with diverse experience and backgrounds. As such, we welcome applications from diverse or marginalised groups with a particular emphasis on younger trustees, people who identify as disabled and people from minority ethnic backgrounds. We also welcome applications from individuals who live outside of the South-East and bring a regional perspective.

Mindful of our strategic priorities, and skills areas of our existing trustees, we’re interested in candidates with experience and understanding of one or more of any of the following areas, which would be advantageous in strengthening our current Board membership:

For individuals with less NED experience, we are eager to engage people with

  • Lived experience of financial hardship – personal experience of financial hardship, or exposure to working closely with people who have experienced it.
  • Regional perspective – individuals located outside of the South-East and London.

For individuals who bring more NED or executive experience, we are interested in those with a background in

  • Technology and transformation – with a particular focus on the intersection of technology, people and business transformation.
  • Retail Banking – experienced at a senior level in consumer lending in customer facing retail banking organisations.
  • Policy and government – experience navigating and influencing policy at government level (with an awareness of devolved administrations).
  • Risk Management – ability to absorb and interpret complex data and information and reach informed judgment.
  • Legal – senior level legal experience gained in a relevant discipline.

In addition to any of the areas listed above, we would also like our trustees to have

  • A wholehearted commitment to the values and mission of StepChange Debt Charity.
  • An understanding of and investment in the role and responsibilities of a Trustee.
  • A willingness and ability to devote the necessary time to the role of trustee.
  • An understanding of strategic decision making.
  • A team-oriented approach to problem solving and management, and the ability to build and sustain positive relationships with key stakeholders and colleagues.
  • A commitment to fairness and to promoting equality, diversity and inclusion.
  • Good communication skills as well as the ability to listen and respect the ideas of others.
  • Sound independent judgement, strategic vision and the ability to think creatively.
  • A commitment to Nolan’s seven principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership.

 * Applicants should be aware of the statutory restrictions in place that prevent individuals with an undischarged bankruptcy order becoming a charity trustee.
