Southbank Centre is looking to appoint up to three new Governors to its non-executive Board.
We are looking for individuals with sufficient time to commit to the role (around the equivalent of 2days per month), as well as a proven track record in at least one of the following areas:
- Commercial leadership and influence
- Business transformation
- Previous Board experience (as a non-Executive director and/or Trustee)
- Government and policy influence and connectivity
The Southbank has a diverse, multi-talented Board under the Chairmanship of Misan Harriman. The Executive welcomes the active involvement of Governors in supporting initiatives and helping them ensure that the Southbank combines artistic ambition, commercial initiative and good governance. Some members of the Board, at the CEO’s request, have also volunteered to mentor and support individual members of the Executive team.
The role of Governor offers individuals the chance to play a significant part in shaping the future of the UK’s largest national cultural institution.
Governors are members of Southbank Centre’s governing body with responsibility for:
Strategy and Direction
- Contributing towards and approving Southbank Centre’s objectives and overall strategic plans, and its artistic, learning and participation, public affairs, marketing, development, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion and access strategies.
- Supporting the Executive team with cultivation of all stakeholders and in particular with key Government departments.
- Contributing towards and approving Southbank Centre’s financial plans and strategies, both short- and long-term, cash flow management plans and annual report and accounts, and to review its risk management strategy, including its responsibility for Health and Safety issues.
Governance

- Approving Southbank Centre’s contracts and verbal commitments with a value in excess of £1,000,000 or having duration in excess of three years.
- Defining what the Board requires from the Executive in order to discharge its responsibilities, and to monitor the Executive’s performance in that respect.
- Setting the terms of reference for and monitoring the performance of the Committees of the Board. These Committees, both in an informal and formal way, provide Governors with the opportunity to support, review, test and challenge, in a highly dynamic and collaborative way, the business model assumptions and performance, as well as how best to explore new opportunities.
People and Culture
- Approving the appointment or re-appointment of the Chief Executive and Artistic Director.
- Monitoring the delivery of Southbank’s commitment to diversity and access.
