Person Specification – Chief Executive Officer

Essential Criteria

  • Have substantial general management experience (managing more than one function) in a significant and complex service providing organisation including responsibility for a budget.
  • Demonstrable ability to build and sustain high performing teams, and to foster effective working across disciplines – spanning service delivery, policy, advocacy, community, and communications functions.
  • Possess a degree and/or appropriate professional management qualification.
  • Be a strategic and innovative thinker capable of securing balanced and effective solutions within available financial resources.
  • Be an enthusiastic and visionary leader able to set out and articulate a clear vision for the Society’s future and demonstrate commitment to both the Sickle Cell cause and the charity sector.
  • Demonstrate an ability to develop and operate team and intra-professional corporate working.
  • Possess drive, persistence and resilience evidenced by a proven track record of promoting and effectively managing change and development.
  • Be a confident communicator with good interpersonal skills able to express ideas both verbally and in writing to differing audiences and able to attend community events up and down the country.
  • Demonstrable evidence of strong negotiation skills.
  • Experience of working at board level and a thorough understanding of governance processes.
  • Demonstrable commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.
  • Risk management experience.

Desirable Criteria

  • A track record of successful income generation experience including through voluntary income sources.
  • Senior level experience in a voluntary organisation or ethnic minority-led charity.
  • Lived experience of sickle cell disease of a strong understanding of the sickle cell environment.
  • Recent experience of working in the health service in the United Kingdom at a leadership level.
