Role Description – Member

As a Multi Academy Trust Member reporting to the Ormiston Trust, you will have responsibilities to ensure the long-term integrity, strategic alignment, and charitable purpose of one or more of its sponsored Multi-Academy Trusts (MATs): Ormiston Academies Trust (OAT), Gateway Learning Community (GLC), and Birmingham Ormiston Academy (BOA). In this vital role, you will act as a constitutional guardian of the Trust’s objects, support appointment and hold Trustees to account, and help safeguard effective, values-led leadership across the MAT (i.e. enrichment and a broad and balanced education).This is the fundamental nature of what the Ormiston vision in education is about.

Accountabilities

Governance and Statutory Duties

  • Act as the guardians of the charitable objects of OTs sponsored MATs.
  • Appoint and where necessary remove MAT “sponsor-appointed trustees”.
  • Attend and vote at the Annual General Meeting (AGM), approving the annual report and accounts and exercising key constitutional powers as defined in the Articles of Association.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of the Trust’s governance through high-level scrutiny.

Strategic Challenge and Engagement

  • Participate in triannual strategic meetings with the Chairs of OAT, GLC and BOA, providing challenge, support, and insight from a Member perspective.
  • Review governance and board papers, including committee minutes and key strategic documents.
  • Contribute to a culture of high expectations at its sponsored MATs.

Trustee and Leadership Oversight

  • Support recruitment and succession planning for Trustees, ensuring a diverse, skilled and committed board.
  • Provide independent assurance on significant matters of performance or governance risk, when required.
  • Where necessary, support governance reviews and appointments panels.
  • Attend MAT key events and visit schools

Championing Vision and Values

  • Promote and protect the values, founding vision and current strategy of the Ormiston Trust and its MATs.
  • Act as ambassadors for effective, community-focused values-led education.
  • Contribute to the development of a strong, collaborative culture across the Ormiston Trust family of organisations.
