Welcome

Thank you for your interest in the role of Deputy Director within the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s (NMC) Professional Regulation directorate.

As the largest professional regulator in the world, responsible for the registration of more than 800,000 nurses, midwives and nursing associates in the UK, we have a critical role in protecting the public, promoting confidence in the nursing and midwifery professions and upholding the standards of proficiency.

You will be joining at a pivotal moment of change and transformation as we continue with the important task of building a new, stronger and fit for the future NMC, with fairness and equity at the heart of everything we do.

Over the past 12 months we’ve achieved a great deal across culture, regulation and education and standards, including:

  • Publishing our new NMC strategy which sets out our ambitions up until 31 March 2027.
  • Launching our three-year Culture Transformation Plan, to help us build a culture that’s positive, empowering and inclusive.
  • Rolling out our new organisational values of Integrity, Fairness, Respect, Equity and Effectiveness.
  • Expanding our Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) focus and ambitions, including the development of five key EDI targets.
  • Setting out our new Midwifery Action Plan, to ensure safe, equitable and person-centred maternity care and education.
  • Ending a year of progress in Fitness to Practise (FtP) with cases being resolved at the fastest rate in nearly five years.

Central to our transformation journey is the delivery of our Fitness to Practise (FtP) improvement programme, a key measure of our regulatory performance and impact.

While FtP only applies to around 1% of those on the NMC register, we have a duty to screen and investigate concerns and, where necessary, take decisive action to protect the public by limiting, restricting or stopping a nursing or midwifery professional’s practise.

Our FtP improvements are working. But there is a long way to go before everybody feels the benefit of faster, fairer processes and modernised ways of working. That is why we are delivering our FtP improvement plan at pace, focused on building the foundations we need to deliver proportionate, consistent, fair decisions at the earliest point in our process and a better end-to-end experience.

This year, significant priorities include a new Investigations operating model, a consistent end-to-end quality assurance framework, and a much better case management system for our teams – alongside preparing for significant legislative changes and regulatory reform.

With a caseload of over 6,000 FtP cases and a challenging operating context, our teams work within a legalistic, complex and high-risk environment. We are seeking an exceptional strategic leader to join our supportive Executive Management Team, a talented individual who can harness multi-disciplinary expertise, enable early, well-judged decision-making and work collaboratively to deliver a high-quality service that reflects our values and improves the experience of all who engage with it.

If this sounds like you, I look forward to hearing from you.

Lesley Maslen,
Executive Director of Professional Regulation
