Thank you for your interest in joining our Board of Trustees.

The National Trust protects and cares for places so people and nature can thrive. We look after hundreds of houses and close to a million objects along with vast areas of coastline, countryside and green spaces, for everyone’s benefit. With our staff, members, volunteers and supporters, we’re the biggest conservation charity in Europe. Everyone can get involved, everyone can make a difference.

The last two years have been unlike any others, with many challenges tackled as the unforeseen pandemic hit the nation and the organisation hard.  But with the help of our supporters, we continue our work to protect and care for special places so people and nature can thrive for generations to come.

Octavia Hill, one of the National Trust’s founders, once said that without space ‘we cannot reach that sense of quiet in which whispers of better things come to us.’ More than a century later, her words feel more relevant than ever. The pandemic has not affected every person equally, and those living without access to nature or culture were particularly affected by lockdown restrictions. Our legacy from this period is a renewed determination to ensure that everyone can enjoy nature-rich green spaces on their doorstep and benefit from local heritage and the shared cultural spaces that help bring communities together.

The Trust is proud of what has been achieved over the last 127 years and is determined to maintain those high standards of conservation, stewardship and curatorial care for which it has been recognised throughout the world.  Its achievements have enabled the general public and the Trust’s members and visitors to enjoy and appreciate the countryside, coastline, gardens, historic buildings and collections, all of which encapsulate so much of the history of England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Our strategy, Nature, Beauty, History, For Everyone, For Ever, which will take the Trust through to 2025, outlines our 21st century ambition to play a major role in the fight against climate change, meet the needs of an environment under pressure, and the challenges and expectations of a fast-moving world.  Underpinning this is our renewed commitment to diversity and inclusion and to ensuring that our charity is welcoming for all.

We are now seeking up to four outstanding Trustees who can help deliver the next phase of our history.  People who will bring different lived experiences, fresh thinking and a desire to make a change. If this sounds like you, we hope you will be inspired to apply.
