Role Description

Guts UK is looking for new Chief Executive to join us as we seek to build on our important work and take the charity forward on its journey to help even more people living with digestive disorders.

The successful applicant will be passionate about and committed to leading the UK to get to grips with guts, will bring a strong track record of visionary leadership and passion, strong ambassadorial experience and evidenced ability to lead an organisation for growth and delivery.

We are looking for someone with a clear vision for how the charity can be expand and grow and as well as the skills, commitment, and drive to lead this expansion.

The successful applicant must be an outstanding communicator, adaptable, understand the role of medical research and advice charities, fundraising, provide clear leadership to its staff and be passionate about ensuring the voice of the patient is heard and woven throughout our work.

Hours: Full time, 35 hours per week.

Salary: £70-80k

Direct Reports: 5 (pending some structure changes)

Location: London (NW1) and Huddersfield (HD1). We are open to flexible working arrangements but a regular presence in our London and our Huddersfield offices will be required.

Key responsibilities

Leading delivery of charitable objectives – expert information, raising public awareness and funding life-changing research

  • Lead the team to develop, establish and implement robust research, information and public awareness strategies, planning for appropriate processes and resources to support the delivery of the charity’s research aims and objectives.
  • Lead activities to engage people living with digestive disorders and their families, friends and carers to ensure their voice is led by and woven throughout Guts UK’s work.
  • Ensure processes are in place to collect information on and measure the impact of delivery of Guts UK’s charitable objectives.

Strategic development and governance

  • Lead the development and delivery of Guts UK’s strategy, including the direction, plan for growth and prioritisation and delivery plans, seeking stakeholder input and/or approval as appropriate and ensuring the patient voice is woven throughout.
  • Report progress effectively to Trustees, sub-committees, patient and research panels and other stakeholders.
  • Work with the Board to ensure that the appropriate governance structures and actions are fully compliant with legal and regulatory obligations.
  • Create, maintain and develop strategic partnerships and act as an ambassador for Guts UK.
  • Shape and lead an inclusive organisation where staff feel that they belong and can do their best work.

Finance and operations

  • Accountable for the overall financial performance of Guts UK, providing leadership for effective and transparent financial planning and budgets with foreseeable risks and mitigations.
  • Lead the development of plans for growth of our work and income to support it and work with COO and Board to ensure the charity has the appropriate level of financial reserves.
  • Accountable for financial and operational procedures ensuring an effective day to day function of the charity.
  • Accountable for the provision of safe and appropriate working arrangements, that the charity adheres appropriately to HR policies and procedures and upholds inclusive practices.

Stakeholder engagement and management 

  • Create, maintain, and develop strategic partnerships outside of Guts UK and act as an ambassador for Guts UK.
  • Represent Guts UK at external events, forums, and conferences.
  • Be a key media spokesperson for Guts UK.

Fundraising, communications and brand 

  • Accountable for an effective and sustainable fundraising strategy and delivery plans in place to provide sustainable income through providing leadership to the Head of Income Generation.
  • Accountable for driving commercial activities provide maximum return and are effectively managed to protect charitable status.
  • Oversee brand consistency, ensuring it reflects Guts UK values and support plans to raise the presence and profile of Guts UK through integrated awareness and fundraising campaigns, media strategy and website development.
  • Accountable for the development and maintenance of effective channels of marketing and communication with all stakeholders, people living with digestive disorders and their families, friends and carers and donors.

Leadership

  • Provide clear and engaged leadership to the staff and volunteers at the charity.
  • Lead the team, providing appropriate support and supervision, understanding development needs and desires, providing training, mentoring and coaching as well as leading on ensuring and driving staff wellbeing across the organisation.
  • Ensure the establishment of a clear organisational structure and empower people to act in furnace of the Charities aims and objectives.
  • Any other duties as required that are reasonably commensurate with the duties and responsibilities of the post.

All team members at Guts UK are expected to play their part in our public education and awareness events and therefore attendance at other locations in the UK and sometimes outside of normal working hours will be required on occasion. Expenses and time off in lieu are offered.
