We are at a genuinely significant moment for GamCare and for the field we work in. The past year brought the most substantial structural change the gambling harm sector has seen: the transition to statutory levy-based commissioning, a shift that fundamentally restructured not only how the sector is funded but how it is governed and overseen across the United Kingdom. That transition tested every organisation in the sector. GamCare came through it having maintained the quality and reach of its frontline services, absorbed demand well beyond its commissioned services, and secured commissioning outcomes that reflect nearly three decades of integrated delivery. It is a record that reflects an organisation that knows its mission when the landscape around it is shifting.
The external environment remains complex. Reform is still working its way through the system, and the conditions in which we operate continue to evolve. And yet, GamCare’s position as a leading provider of information, advice and support for anyone affected by gambling harm has never been more clearly earned.
GamCare is constitutionally gambling-neutral. Gambling is legal, and millions of people engage with it safely. For those who experience harm, GamCare is here to help. Our approach is confidential, non-judgemental, person-centred and grounded in evidence. We do not moralise; we support. That distinction matters, and it shapes everything that GamCare does.
GamCare has developed specialist expertise in gambling harm as a behavioural rather than a substance issue. It requires approaches to help seeking behaviour, therapeutic interventions and pathways to recovery that are distinct from those associated with substance addiction. It is a principle that shapes everything GamCare does. GamCare’s work is rooted in a simple but profound truth: that recovery happens when the individual is ready, and that the right skilled support, offered at the right moment, can make that possible.
As part of the Board’s planned renewal, we are now recruiting new Trustees to ensure we have the breadth of perspective and experience needed to guide GamCare through its next stage. We are looking for people who see trusteeship not as a title but as a commitment to what this organisation does and the difference it makes; individuals who understand that the role is one of oversight and strategic challenge and who exercise considered judgement, bring genuine rigour to Board discussions, challenge with care and work collegially. The decisions we take influence not only the future of GamCare but, through the organisation’s role within a changing system, the experience of the people and communities we exist to serve.
