Location: This job can be located in any CPS Office with regular travel to London expected, at least weekly. Also travel to other locations as required. (CPS Offices)
Salary: Up to £140k 
Grade: SCS2

Director of Legal Services

This role is accountable for:

Two Directors of Legal Services (DLS) will manage all the Chief Crown Prosecutors across England & Wales.

They will provide assurance to the DPP and DGLD on the quality of the legal decision-making and casework progression in the CPS, ensuring that quality standards and values are met. Working together this role has shared accountability to set the operational direction and legal service priorities for the CPS Areas and Casework Divisions and to collectively lead and manage performance against them.

Through visible and inspiring leadership, and the active performance management of the senior legal manager cadre, the DLS will ensure the delivery of the CPS vision and objectives.

Key to this role will be the maintenance and monitoring of performance against a robust quality framework to identify, drive and deliver continual improvement through people, legal process and technology.

The DLS will also be part of the DPP’ senior executive team along with the DGLD, Chief Operating Officer, and other Directors. The DLS will advise this group on all aspect of the CPS operational performance.

Some Key Responsibilities will include:

  • Engage with and contribute to the strategic planning process to understand corporate risks, vulnerabilities and opportunities.
  • Lead activity to develop an Areas and Casework Divisions strategy and plan that aligns with the corporate strategy; engaging across the business to ensure alignment and consistency.
  • Contribute to shaping the legal service offer and operating model (its people, process and technology) by bringing the legal services perspective and ensuring that priorities and needs are fully considered.
  • Review, evaluate, monitor, and ensure accountability for performance against agreed standards, measures and budget.
  • Engage with criminal justice system operational partners and ensure CPS change programmes are aligned with Government and wider initiatives.
  • Provide legal opinion to support the legal teams, challenging performance, quality and delivery standards for all operational units.
