Welcome

Thank you for your interest in the Programme Director role at the Coal Authority. We’re a practical and operational organisation who operate 24/7 incident and emergency response to protect and support the communities we serve from the impacts of past mining.

You’ll be joining us at an exciting and important time. Over its 29 year history the organisation has proven its ability to respond to emergency situations, solve complex problems, provide expertise to support partners and use our information to help people make informed decisions. Our work protects lives, drinking water and the environment and we also seek to grow, learn and be innovative so that we don’t just respond to the challenges of mining legacy but also seek creative benefits such as using warm mine-water to provide low carbon heating for homes and businesses. We aspire to be net-zero carbon by 2030 and alongside technology and innovation we will do this by maximising habitats and nature resilience at our sites and providing access to nature and green space.

We published our latest 3 year Business Plan in May 2022 which includes a 10 year Vision for our work. This covers not just what we do but how we do it and includes our Mission to ‘make a better future for people and the environment in mining areas’ and our Values ‘Trusted, Inclusive and Progressive.’

We couldn’t do any of our work without our great people. We invest in learning and development and have a clear focus on flexibility, wellbeing and diversity inclusion – including taking practical steps to become a more actively anti-racist organisation. In joining our leadership team you will help inspire the organisation to be a truly great place to work for everyone.

This is a new role which will take responsibility for developing a major programme from strategic outline case through feasibility, design and implementation over a 10 year + horizon. This will involve working closely with government at senior official and ministerial level across a range of departments. The programme relates to complex aspects of our future mine water treatment approach (specifically inland saline mine water) and will involve significant national infrastructure, significant partnerships and innovative solutions. We’re looking for someone who works well with others, thrives on innovation, enjoys seeking learning and best practice from a range of places and is excited by finding solutions to complex challenges.

Relevant experience with a positive attitude and commitment to the role and organisation is more important than length of experience or particular skill sets. We’d prefer to focus on what you could bring to the role, the organisation and our customers so if you’re interested or excited by what you’ve seen so far then do express your interest and have a conversation.

I can’t wait to meet you.
