Terms of Appointment

Remuneration

The role is non-executive and unpaid but all reasonable travel and accommodation expenses will be reimbursed.

Time Commitment

The Board currently meets four times a year, in February, June, October and December. Three of these meetings are for half a day (usually 1.30-5.00pm). The June meeting is for a full day. The June and October meetings are usually in person and the February and December meetings are usually via Zoom. The in-person meetings are generally at Church House, London. However, we aim to hold a residential meeting once in every triennium outside London: the next such occasion will be planned for June 2027.

Preparation for a meeting will usually involve up to five hours of reading. It is hoped individual Board members would be willing to offer strategic insight or advice on major activities taken forward by staff working within the Investment programme, as time allows. We estimate that, in total, Board members should allow the equivalent of a day a month for their work on the Board (although the work will not fall evenly across each month but will be tied mainly to each of the four Board meetings).

In addition, online briefing meetings with staff are offered ahead of each Board meeting on an optional basis for any member who would find this helpful. There are also occasional opportunities to attend General Synod fringe meetings about the Board’s work and for visits to funded programmes, again all on an optional basis.

Length of Appointment

The Archbishops’ Council will appoint members of the Board for a three-year term. Members will be eligible for re-appointment but may not serve for more than three consecutive terms.

Occupational Requirement

All members will need to be practising Christians, able to fully participate in prayerful discernment.

Location

Church House, Great Smith Street London SW1P 3AZ.

Belonging and Inclusion

The Church of England is for everyone and we want our committees to reflect the diversity of the community the Church serves across the whole country. Therefore, while of course all applications from interested and suitably experienced people are welcomed, we would particularly welcome applicants from groups that are under- represented in the Church, in particular younger members, members from UK Minority Ethnic backgrounds and from lowest income communities. We will be pleased to make adjustments necessary to accommodate disabled candidates during the recruitment process and following appointment.

Disqualifications

All applicants will be able to demonstrate they have not been disqualified by law from acting as trustees.
