The core role of our Treasurer is to maintain an overview of UNICEF UK’s financial affairs as well as fulfilling the duties of a Trustee. Working closely with the Chief Financial Officer and wider Executive Team, the Treasurer will ensure that effective financial measures, controls and procedures are in place so that UNICEF UK is a financially healthy organisation.
Trustees take a wider perspective of UNICEF UK, guiding and supporting as much as providing checks and balances, and collaborate closely with our talented Executive Team and staff body as well as the wider Board.
We are committed to putting children first, finding solutions, mutual trust and respect, inclusion and belonging, compassion and collaboration. Our Trustees – past, current and new – lead with values and share our passion for making a positive, tangible difference for children in the UK and all around the world.
Responsibilities:
- Chair the Finance Committee to oversee UNICEF UK’s financial affairs, advising the Board of Trustees in relation to the fulfilment of their responsibilities for the financial wellbeing and propriety of the organisation
- Alongside the Audit & Risk Committee and Executive Team, ensure that adequate financial and accounting policies, procedures, internal controls and risk assessments are in place and that UNICEF UK operates within a sound financial framework
- Work closely with and support the CFO to ensure that the financial information presented to the Board meets the needs of Trustees and enables effective decision making
- Advise the Board on the financial implications of its strategic plans and policy objectives, and provide pragmatic commercial feedback within the operating environment of a charity
- Act as a key governance leader for UNICEF UK, ensuring that both individual Trustees and the collective Board work in partnership with the Executive Team to deliver the organisation’s vision and strategy and to guard the long-term future of the charity
- Ensure all major strategic plans are financially appraised and budgets are aligned to both short and long-term objectives
Terms of Appointment
As Treasurer of the UNICEF UK Board, you will normally be expected to attend every Board meeting that is typically held during office hours in person. There are five scheduled Board meetings during the year and one or two ad-hoc virtual meetings. The Treasurer also chairs the Finance Committee and is a member of the Audit and Risk Committee, both of which meet three to four times per year. There will be an element of being ‘on call’ for the Executive Team and Board of Trustees when necessary, and there will be regular meetings with the CFO around the preparation for the Board or Finance Committee.
Between meetings, there will be ad hoc papers for approval and occasional working groups established by the Board to examine relevant issues, time for reading and considering Board papers, and discussions with relevant colleagues.
The appointment period of the role is three years, which may be extended for two further periods of three years provided the person concerned still meets the criteria for membership of the Board and the needs of the organisation. The position is voluntary and unremunerated, with reasonable expenses payable in line with UNICEF UK’s standard expense policies.
