Role Description – Chief Operating Officer

Salary: £110K per annum
People Responsibility: Director of Transformation, Director of Income and Engagement, Director of Finance, Director of People and Inclusion, Associate Director of Exec Office, Executive Assistant to COO (6 Direct Reports, c160 Indirect Reports)
Budget responsibility: With the Co-CEOs & CPO, responsible for the overall financial strategy of the organisation, c£45m
Location & Travel required: Based from home, or at one of Trussell’s offices, travel around the UK as necessary

Role outline and purpose

This role is responsible for the operational and strategic oversight of Trussell as an organisation, ensuring our approaches to the stewardship of our core assets (people, finances, knowledge, technology and relationships) are aligned with our values and approaches, and our strategic vision. Overseeing two underpinning strategic programmes, as well as our mission enabling teams, this role has a particular focus on ensuring the effectiveness of our work together – identifying and seizing opportunities for organisational improvement and enrichment. As a chief officer of Trussell, this role carries responsibility for overall leadership of the organisation and acts as a strategic ambassador for Trussell externally.

This role is part of Trussell’s Exec team, the goal of which is to provide effective leadership to the organisation, ensuring the delivery of our strategic outcomes, maintaining and developing a network of key relationships and building a culture and ethos which embodies our organisational values and approaches. In doing so, this role underpins the success of our organisational strategy – contributing to the fulfilment of our long-term vision of a UK without the need for food banks.

Role Responsibilities

  • Together with the Co-CEOs & CPO set and drive Trussell’s vision and strategy and embed our values, with a particular focus on our staff team and volunteers, supporters, service providers and food banks.
  • Provide direction and support to the team of Directors / Associate Directors in the delivery of our strategic framework, including embedding high-impact approaches to mission enablement, ensuring the effective flow of information across the organisation, and strengthening our culture of agility and innovation.
  • Provide strategic leadership in the area of organisational operations and stewardship, supporting the delivery of a strategic and sustainable financial plan, growing our ability to harness technology and innovation, strengthen our ability to share knowledge and information and continue to enable and empower a dynamic, thriving and inclusive organisational culture.
  • Ensure that we are anticipating and navigating strategic risks as an organisation whilst remaining agile and oriented towards the impact of our mission, operating in a highly unpredictable environment under significant public and statutory scrutiny.
  • Act as an authentic ambassador for Trussell amongst key external stakeholder groups including food banks, partners, and suppliers.
  • Responsible for reporting to the board (including as the key exec member for the Finance, Audit, Risk and Governance Subcommittee) and externally on all aspects of the organisations work.
