Appointment and timescales
The term of office is four years with the potential of a further four-year term (to be agreed with the Board of Trustees and the CEO).
Remuneration
The role of the Chair is a voluntary position and is not remunerated. Reasonable travel expenses incurred as part of the role will be reimbursed in accordance with The Charity’s Expenses Policy.
Location
This role is hybrid, with main board meetings held at The Charity’s office in Fleet, Hampshire.
Time commitment
On average, we expect the Chair role to require a time commitment of two to three days per month. This includes the following attendance at meetings and other duties below.
- Attending main board meetings:
- The Board of trustees meet in person four times a year for three hours each time (two days’ time requirement in total). Meetings are held Monday – Friday between 9am to 5pm.
- The meetings in 2025 are scheduled for March, June, September and December. At present, these board meetings are held in The Brain Tumour’s office in Fleet, Hampshire.
- Supporting subcommittees:
- Currently this includes chairing the Remuneration Committee, attending the Finance Committee, and attending Governance & Ethics and other committees by invitation
- Subcommittee meetings are typically each 2hrs in duration and are hybrid. The frequency of subcommittees depends upon their area of focus and meeting frequency ranges from one to three times a year. (½ to 1.5 days’ time commitment in total).
- Additional requirements of a trustee:
- All trustees are asked to commit to other trustee-level activities outside of the meetings. This may include ad hoc interactions and meetings, which are typically convened remotely.
- Trustees may also support external activities such as fundraising events.
- New trustees commit to a short series of onboarding meetings to support their introduction to The Charity and to the Board of trustees.
- All trustees are responsible for their continued professional development through access to NCVO and Charity resources.
Practical requirements of fulfilling the role
All trustees will need access to a computer, the internet and an email address. All trustees have access to SharePoint for document sharing.
In accordance with Charity Commission Guidance on the Recruitment & Selection of Charity Trustees, no one under the age of 18 can be appointed as a Trustee. Some people are disqualified by law from acting as a Trustee. Please check the Charity Commission website for further details (www.charitycommission.gov.uk).
