About Us

We are Sustrans. We work for and with communities, helping them come to life by walking, wheeling and cycling. We campaign to create healthier places and happier lives for everyone. We know that the benefits of walking, wheeling, cycling and healthy places are not experienced in the same way by everyone. And so we prioritise work with people and in places that challenge this.

Across the UK we have over 700 employees and 3,000 volunteers, and we all work together to make change happen. We’re custodians of the National Cycle Network, a UK-wide network of over 10,000 miles of signed paths and routes for walking, wheeling, cycling and exploring outdoors. This provides a vital backbone to the country, connecting communities to each other and helping neighbourhoods come to life.

We believe that cities and towns can – and should – be designed with everyone’s health and wellbeing in mind, rather than for cars. Places with clean air and green spaces where everyone has the choice to walk, wheel, cycle, or scoot safely to school, work and around their neighbourhood. As a practical, impact-led charity, we listen, influence and find solutions. We bring together the people who live and spend time in our cities and towns, particularly those most marginalised, to make the changes they want to see.

At Sustrans, our values guide us in everything we do:

  • Including everyone
  • Having the courage to question
  • Acting local, thinking big
  • Getting things done, together
  • Always learning

We’ve set out to be a charity for everyone. This means that we want to be a charity where people can be their true self, and feel included and empowered to make a difference. Our Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) workstreams are crucial in helping us become a more diverse and inclusive place to work and volunteer, and to achieve our mission of making it easier for everyone to walk, wheel and cycle.
