Role Description – Chief Executive Officer

Reporting To: Council of Trustees, through the Chair

Place of Work: Woods Mill pending a move to The Keep, Brighton

Salary: £90,000

Job Purpose

Accountable to the Council of Trustees, the role of the Chief Executive is to deliver the Sussex Wildlife Trust’s (SWT) strategy, reflecting the values of the organisation and representing SWT to the public, members and partners organisations. The CEO provides the strategic leadership and management of the team and is responsible for all operational matters.

Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership and Development

  1. Further develop, implement and monitor SWT’s strategy “Our Wild Sussex”.
  2. Lead, inspire, motivate and provide direction across the organisation, ensuring effective coordination and internal communications which support our values.
  3. Lead and manage the Senior Leadership Team to deliver strategic innovation and operation sustainability.
  4. Lead the development and implementation of policies and procedures to further the SWT’s objectives.

Governance

  1. Develop a strong relationship with the Chair and Trustees through a collaborative and shared responsibility approach to facilitate effective governance.
  2. Ensure that the Trustees are informed, advised and supported to make appropriate decisions and to enable them to fulfil the full range of their governance responsibilities.
  3. Together with the Chair, lead the administration of the activities of the SWT Council and/or associated ventures for which the SWT has management responsibility.
  4. Ensure that the organisation follows best practice and complies with relevant legal, statutory and regulatory requirements.

External Relations

  1. Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders including partners, supporters and government agencies and the local community. Represent SWT and seek opportunities to develop existing and additional mutually beneficial relationships.
  2. Ensure SWT participates in the activities of The Wildlife Trusts and liaise and work with RSWT and other Wildlife Trusts when appropriate.
  3. Act as an ambassador and figurehead for SWT at local, regional and national level and in the media, advocating policies and practices that benefit wildlife and biodiversity.

Organisational Management

  1. Act under delegated powers to fulfil those responsibilities that have been set out withing SWT’s Delegation Framework as being within the power of the CEO.
  2. Deliver SWT’s overall strategic financial management ensuring the effective and compliant management and monitoring of SWT’s resources and people.
  3. Responsible for ensuring that there are robust systems and processes in place and a culture which ensures that the organisation manages risk and is compliant with all regulatory requirements.
  4. Ensure the continuous development of the skills and knowledge across SWT through learning opportunities, personal and professional development and performance management.
  5. Ensure a proactive and open-minded approach to diversity and inclusion comply with the requirements of Data Protection and GDPR.
  6. Have a flexible approach to working hours, working unsocial hours, evenings and weekends (and emergency cover), as part of an agreed rota may be required on occasion.
  7. Carry out all other such duties as may from time to time be determined by the Chair and Trustees.
