Your Knowledge and Experience

Essential Criteria

  • Qualified accountant (or equivalent senior financial experience) with a strong technical foundation.
  • Proven track record in shaping financial strategy, audit, and risk management at board or executive level.
  • Experience developing and overseeing budgets, reserves, and investment strategies that support long-term sustainability.

Governance and Risk

  • Experience of operating within a charity or organisation with a complex stakeholder structure, such as a federated or membership organisation.
  • Strong understanding of governance frameworks, internal controls, and assurance processes.
  • Ability to oversee enterprise risk management and ensure compliance with charity law and regulatory standards.

Leadership and Influence

  • Demonstrated ability to chair committees effectively, fostering constructive challenge, consensus and sound decision making.
  • Skilled communicator able to engage trustees, senior executives, and external stakeholders with clarity and authority.

Strategic Thinking

  • Capacity to analyse complex proposals and assess long-term implications for financial sustainability.
  • Experience of organisational change and strategic planning in complex environments.

Time Commitment

Approximately four-six days per month (post-induction), including preparation time. Core commitments include:

  • Chairing four Finance, Risk and Audit Committee meetings annually (held in London or via virtual/hybrid form).
  • Attending Board meetings as required (six scheduled per year, with additional meetings as needed).
  • Attending the Scouts AGM and presenting the organisation’s Annual Accounts.
  • Acting as a key liaison with auditors, investment managers, and advisers.
  • Liaising with the Financial Director and Head of Risk.
