Role Description

What you’ll do as part of our team:

External

  • Lead oversight of our policy, campaigns, and communities functions, working in particular with our Heads of Teams, relevant managers, and to maximise their impact
  • Develop and execute a compelling vision and strategy for our Ocean campaigns on water quality, plastics, climate, and ocean recovery (marine biodiversity)
  • Regularly review the ocean conservation space, with an eye on both threats and opportunities, to ensure SAS continually pushes to strengthen its position, voice, and impact
  • Working closely with our Head of Policy and Campaigns and CEO, lead our parliamentary advocacy, influencing, and pressure
  • Working closely with our Head of Communities and CEO, ensure that we are working effectively with our communities to maximise their participation and impact, and embed practices which ensure equality, diversity and inclusion.
  • Maintain and grow a broad and varied network of allies, experts, and contacts, which includes but is not limited to business, social enterprise, parliamentarians, and community activists / actors
  • Lead on the strategic development of new campaigns and community projects, linking them to specific funding opportunities where appropriate and relevant to our charity goals
  • Represent Surfers Against Sewage publicly, including media interviews, speaking events, and through print, each where appropriate

Internal

  • Work closely with the CEO, Head of Policy and Campaigns, Head of Communities and other pertinent internal stakeholders on the strategic development and innovation of campaigns, reviewing and setting annual, 3-year, and 5-year goals against our 10-year vision
  • Act as a core member of our Executive Leadership Team
  • Play a key role in building a supportive, coaching culture of inclusion, integrity and participation throughout SAS, ensuring that we are representative of the communities we work with and serve
  • Lead a passionate, effective, motivated team, ensuring staff and volunteers are aligned with and enthusiastic about our strategy and the impact they are having
  • Ensure that we are always on the front foot of campaigning strategy, whether through online or offline means, with appetite for creativity and risk
  • Link our campaigns to the news agenda, leading our positioning with the CEO against breaking news as much as longer-term news items
  • With our Head of Communities lead a strategic review of SAS Communities (Plastic Free Communities, Regional Reps, and Volunteer Networks)
  • Recruitment of staff as appropriate
