About you

This is a broad, varied job spanning organisational leadership, team management, campaigning, volunteer management, policy development, and political strategy. We are not necessarily expecting for you to have equal weighting of experience in every area, especially as we are open to a first-time Director as much as an experienced one, but it will be important to demonstrate you can grow into the various aspects of the role that you don’t yet have in order to keep us on a positive trajectory, as much as know how the different elements fit together.

On-paper skills aside, we are looking for a passionate and credible Director of Campaigns and Communities who lives our mission of promoting the health of our oceans and waterways, who can connect people to purpose to impact, and keep SAS as one of the most creative campaigning civil society organisations in the UK.

Location: we offer hybrid working typically with 2 days in our Cornwall HQ each week. We are open to discussing remote working options, and for this role we would require periodic visits to the HQ.

Each of the following would be valuable assets for the role and you’ll need to have several of them to do it well, but individually they aren’t essential requirements:

  • Significant experience of developing and executive creative social change campaigns or at least having held a volunteer-facing position in a campaigning organisation. Experience of supporter engagement and mobilisation will be important, as will at least an understanding of political campaigning
  • Knowledge of accountability / transparency campaigning e.g. within legislative frameworks, especially facing businesses and/or politicians
  • Knowledge of both online and offline campaigning tactics
  • Ideally experience of campaigning and/or policy within an environmental setting
  • A deep understanding of and appreciation for the role of communities in creating positive social change
  • A demonstrable passion for the environment, whether personally or professionally (or both!)
  • A demonstrably inclusive and participatory approach to collaboration, team building, and team management
  • An ability to direct emotional energy through creative campaigns
  • High emotional intelligence, diplomacy, and resilience
  • A collaborative, participatory approach to leadership grounded in positive stewardship
  • An ability to navigate local systems and stakeholders, with an appreciation of the role SAS plays in Cornwall and the Southwest
  • An ability to cross cultural boundaries e.g. from local volunteers through to high-level politicians
