About you 

This is a broad, varied job spanning organisational leadership, team management, campaigning, and advocacy. We are not necessarily expecting for you to have equal weighting of experience in every area, especially as we are open to a first-time CEO as much as an experienced one, but it will be important to demonstrate you can grow into the various aspects of the role that you don’t yet have, in order to keep us on a positive trajectory.  

On-paper skills aside, we are looking for a passionate and credible CEO who lives our mission of promoting the health of our oceans and waterways, who can connect people to purpose to impact.  

Location and travel

The new CEO will based out of our SAS HQ, located in St Agnes, Cornwall. The successful applicant may need to consider relocating for this position. In relation to travel expectations, the CEO role is likely to require some travel around the UK and internationally.

Each of the following would be valuable assets for the role and you’ll need to have several of them to do it well, but individually they aren’t essential requirements:  

  • Clear understanding of campaigning organisations and their role in creating positive change in society. Experience of political campaigning would be advantageous  
  • An ability to quickly form meaningful professional relationships, whether internally to allow for effective and transparent decision-making, or externally to further our aims  
  • High emotional intelligence, diplomacy and resilience  
  • A collaborative, participatory approach to leadership grounded in positive stewardship 
  • Experience of working in an environmental, climate, marine or sustainability organisation / setting, or at least a demonstrable passion for any or all of these areas. Please note that this isn’t necessarily limited to charity experience  
  • An ability to work positively with a voluntary Board of Trustees and a keen understanding of the role they can play and the nuanced pressures they can face  
  • An ability to work effectively with reps, members, and volunteers, with a keen appreciation for the role they play  
  • Experience of setting and delivering organisational or departmental strategy  
  • Understanding of fundraising through different income streams, especially corporate, philanthropic and/or from public supporters  
  • An ability to navigate local systems and stakeholders, with an appreciation of the role SAS plays in Cornwall and the Southwest  
  • An ability to cross cultural boundaries e.g. from local volunteers through to high-level politicians  
  • A demonstrable passion for the outdoors / nature
