Person Specification

A diverse Board with a healthy mix of skills and experience is the foundation of a high performing Trustee Board. We are therefore looking for:

Skills and Experience

  • A seasoned professional content to share their knowledge and insights across a diverse range of challenges beyond the specialisms they possess.
  • Previous experience of working at a high level in a large and complex organisation – the sector is not important per se, but an understanding and awareness of the social and economic pressures which create opportunities and challenges for the Charity is essential.
  • One Trustee will bring substantial financial and commercial acumen and experience, including an understanding of risk management.
  • Another Trustee will bring senior level experience of developing and implementing fundraising strategy within the third sector environment.
  • A third Trustee will bring senior level experience from a health and/or social care arena, demonstrating an understanding of the demands on those sectors and the ways in which volunteering can complement and be integrated into the systems in those sectors.
  • And a fourth Trustee will bring senior level experience of digitisation and demonstrable experience of ways in which digitising an organisation’s processes, procedure and interactions can transform outcomes.

Personal Attributes

  • A commitment to volunteering and to the work of the Charity, its mission, vision and values.
  • An example to others on integrity, equality, diversity and inclusion.
  • Intellectual curiosity/flexibility to allow analysis, constructive questioning and challenge.
  • An understanding of and respect for the role of a non-Executive.
  • A commitment to evidence-based decision making which requires reading papers, gathering knowledge of the Charity and attending meetings.
  • A skilled communicator able to engage with people regardless of age, seniority, background or discipline.
  • Ability to act as an advocate for the Charity.
  • A good sense of humour.

Above all we would like to see a genuine passion in Candidates to make a difference by giving their time, knowledge and experience in support of the Charity’s beneficiaries.

The Commitment

Travel

A willingness to travel throughout the UK, including very occasional overnight stays (for example at the Annual Trustee Away Day or to support external engagements)

15 days per year covering preparation for and attendance at 4 Board meetings per year, an annual Trustee Away Day (which sometimes involves an overnight stay), 4 Committee meetings per year and service visits. Additional time may be required during the first year as part of induction and getting to know the Charity.
