Role Description

The Chair is responsible for managing the day to day business of the Board of Trustees and for providing leadership and support to the Board of Trustees so that it works effectively to fulfil its legal duties and deliver the Charity’s purpose.

Key responsibilities include:

Strategy and Governance

  • Setting the strategic direction of the Charity.
  • Working closely with the CEO to support her implementation of the Charity’s strategy.
  • Ensuring compliance with the Charity’s governing documents, legislation and regulations.
  • Promoting the highest standards of integrity and probity throughout the Charity.
  • Ensuring the accountability of the CEO and senior leadership team.

Board Meetings, Performance and Relationships

  • Setting the content and tone of Trustee Board meetings to facilitate constructive debate and effective decision-making.
  • Managing Trustee Board performance, including establishment and maintenance of effective relationships at Board level and with the CEO and the Leadership Team.
  • Succession building and planning within the Board of Trustees, its Committees and the CEO.
  • Demonstrating visible, ethical and constructive leadership in line with the Charity’s values.
  • Ensuring regular evaluation of the Board of Trustees and its Committee and undertaking the CEO’s annual appraisal ensuring appropriate support and development where necessary.

Stakeholder Relationships

With the CEO:

  • Representing the Charity and its aims externally.
  • Exerting positive influence with key stakeholders and raising the Charity’s profile.
  • Supporting public facing engagements including those with the Royal Household, where needed.
  • Safeguarding the good name and reputation of the charity.
