About Us

RCVS Knowledge is a charity that provides free tools, resources and education to support thousands of veterinary professionals to deliver high-quality evidence-based medicine to millions of animals.

RCVS Knowledge provide access to veterinary research, quality improvement resources and historical collections.

RCVS Knowledge’s mission is to advance the quality of veterinary care for the benefit of animals, the public, and society. The charity meets this mission by championing the use of an evidence-based approach to veterinary medicine and by fostering a culture of continuous Quality Improvement (QI) in practice.

The charity collaborates with veterinary professionals, educators, and organisations, to advance quality of care.

  • It translates and disseminates the latest research from across the globe, making it easier to access and apply to day-to-day work.
  • It fosters approaches to shared learning, with training and tools to help veterinary teams integrate continuous improvement in the care that they provide.
  • It provides access to information that is of immediate value to practicing veterinary professionals and directly contributes to evidence-based clinical decision-making, inspiring a culture of continuous improvement.
  • It provides free tools, resources, and education for veterinary research, improvement, and historical collections, to support thousands of veterinary professionals to deliver high-quality evidence-based medicine to millions of animals.

RCVS Knowledge is the only charity which works across all species types, veterinary specialisms, and

for all members of the veterinary practice team, as well as educators and learners, to advance quality of care. The governance structures of the charity allow it to involve many major organisations and associations in the development of the work; operating an “broker” role providing unbiased improvement support to the whole profession.

RCVS Knowledge is the custodian of the veterinary profession’s history. These collections include:

  • 500 years of veterinary history, available for academic research or simply for browsing. The collections contain rare and beautiful books, letters, artwork, case notes, periodicals and pamphlets that we preserve on behalf of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. Highlights include:
  • Historical journals: Complete collections of the major British veterinary periodicals, including The Veterinarian (1828-1901), Veterinary Journal (1875-present) and Veterinary Record (1888-present), as well as rarer journals including the Farrier & Naturalist (1828-1830), and the Quarterly Journal of Veterinary Science in India (1882-1890).
  • Frederick Smith collection: Correspondence and papers relating to the life and work of Major General Sir Frederick Smith (1857-1929), army veterinarian and author. The collection includes considerable correspondence between Smith and Fred Bullock, Secretary of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons; case notes written while working for the Army Veterinary Service in India 1877-1885; diaries and letters written while serving in the Boer War, 1899-1902; and research notes for publications relating to veterinary history and practice.
  • Anatomical artwork: Paintings from 1820-1848 depicting sections of equine limbs and organs, showing disease and damage. Artists include William Henry Kearney, A A Cane, Joseph Perry and G Kirtland.
