Prostate Cancer UK: Chair of the Major Appeal Board

The Major Appeal Board has been established to work with Prostate Cancer UK to grow support amongst individuals, trusts and corporates for the Major Appeal. The Major Appeal Board will guide and support the Major Appeal through personal donations, leveraging networks, peer-to-peer introductions, effective fundraising and maximising the impact of donations. [1]

The Major Appeal Board members are expected to:

Make introductions: Make introductions between Prostate Cancer UK and potential donors or partners to facilitate opportunities for support.

Fundraise: Attend meetings with and solicit gifts from potential major supporters.

Give: Give a gift within their means to the appeal and actively participate in leading or supporting fundraising campaigns, events and asks.

Network: Leverage personal and professional networks to identify potential donors, corporate partners, and collaborators.

Provide guidance and advice: Offer strategic advice to enhance the appeal strategy and identify innovative opportunities for income generation.

Advocate: We might seek your support in engaging with specific supporters or representing Prostate Cancer UK at a dedicated event.

Host: We would like each member of the Major Appeal Board to get involved with hosting an event focused on the Appeal during their time on the Appeal Board. This can be a small dinner, drinks gathering or anything which suits your networks. Prostate Cancer UK will help organise this with you and can provide funding, to be mutually agreed, to support the event.

Be a spokesperson: To attend supporter meetings if required, be willing to share posts across social media channels (if appropriate), be involved in media opportunities if they present themselves, and involved in filming and photography to help raise the profile of Prostate Cancer UK, and supporting our research, support services and policy work.

Be motivated: We are on an ambitious mission to change the landscape for people with prostate cancer, and we need passionate individuals who want to help transform the lives of people with prostate cancer.

Membership

The Major Appeal Board shall consist of philanthropic supporters, leaders from the private, public, or civil society sectors, and the Chair of Trustees of Prostate Cancer UK.

Members are appointed based on their ability to contribute to the goals of Prostate Cancer UK and the Major Appeal Board. Each Major Appeal Board member is invited to serve for three and a half years, which can be mutually renewed. Appointments may be terminated by either party, provided they give three months’ notice, and will be terminated by Prostate Cancer UK if there has been no contact with a board member for 6 months or more.

Chairperson

The Chairperson will be appointed by Prostate Cancer UK and will be responsible for facilitating meetings, ensuring adherence to the terms of reference, and liaising with Prostate Cancer UK’s executive and senior leadership team.

The Chairperson of the Major Appeal Board will be expected to host an event once a year, supported by the Prostate Cancer UK team, and be a named signatory on our impact reports.

Meetings

We ask the Major Appeal Board to commit to attending four Board meetings each year, with additional meetings scheduled as needed. Meetings may be held virtually or in person, depending on the circumstances and availability of members. We would expect your role on the Major Appeal Board to take up approximately 7 hours of your time a month, although this will flex slightly depending on time of the year, events we have planned, board meetings and other activities.

Representing Prostate Cancer UK

A thorough onboarding process will be provided for Major Appeal Board members, giving members the time and information required to carry out their role and there will be an induction on key polices such as our acceptance and refusal of donations and due diligence. This includes avoiding any relationships with individuals and corporates which could undermine Prostate Cancer UK’s reputation.

The Major Appeal Board is not a governing board of the charity and through the Trustee role on the Appeal Board we will connect decisions and conversations to the central governance of the charity.

Members of the board will adhere to Prostate Cancer UK’s values.

Confidentiality

Board members must respect the confidentiality of sensitive information shared during meetings, communications, and events.

Our commitment to you

Prostate Cancer UK will be continually grateful for the role your play for the charity and the appeal and will work to support your activity and enable the Major Appeal Board to thrive.

We will commit to:

  • A senior named point of contact at Prostate Cancer UK.
  • An induction from the team at Prostate Cancer UK to ensure you are comfortable with your commitments as a Board Member and provide you with detailed information about the work we do.
