Dear Candidate,
Thank you for your interest in joining the Board of the Office of the Independent Adjudicator for Higher Education as lay perspective Non-Executive Directors. This is a pivotal moment to join the OIA as we look to the future.
The OIA exists to uphold fairness for students. When a student has exhausted their provider’s internal processes and still feels something has gone wrong, we offer an independent route to review: careful, consistent, and grounded in what is reasonable. This adjudication work requires rigour in decisions, clarity and care in outcomes, and a steady commitment to public confidence in a system that can feel complex at the moment someone needs it the most.
The Higher education sector is under real pressure: challenged funding models as well as increased political and regulatory scrutiny. Student expectations are shifting quickly, and trust is shaped as much by accessibility and communication as by technical competence. Students and Providers need to understand what we do, how we do it, and what they can expect from us. The effectiveness of the OIA rests on sound judgement and independence, but also on how well we communicate, how responsibly we use data and digital tools, and how confidently we demonstrate strong oversight and assurance driven through a dynamic and engaged Board.
As our current Board members reach the end of their term, we are seeking individuals who are purpose led, and who will bring a wide range of Board experience from across both the Public and Private sectors. We welcome diverse professional journeys, united by common purpose: driven by integrity, foresight and curiosity. You will be joining a Board that is continually striving to attain maximum effectiveness, whilst ensuring the right balance between assurance, risk and driving strategy. As we look to expand our remit into Wales and the Further Education sector, our Students will remain at the heart of everything we do.
The OIA is undivided in its commitment to diversity, inclusion, and real change. We actively welcome applications from candidates with a wide range of skills, experiences, and backgrounds. If you believe you have the skills and qualities we are looking for, we very much look forward to hearing from you.
With warm regards,
Sim Scavazza
Chair of the Board
