The Chair should possess the gravitas to lead the Board effectively and enhance the organisation’s public profile and influence.

Relationship building and networking.

Excellent networking and relationship-building skills are essential, particularly with potential supporters and funders.

Diplomacy and collaboration.

The Chair should be tactful, diplomatic, and able to foster a collaborative and positive team environment.

Strong leadership and motivational skills.

The ideal candidate will have strong leadership skills and the ability to motivate both staff and volunteers.

Experience

Strategic leadership.

A successful track record of operating at a senior strategic leadership level within an organisation is required.

External representation.

Experience representing organisations externally and managing stakeholder relationships is essential.

Charity governance understanding.

A strong understanding of charity governance is preferred, ideally with prior experience as a Trustee or a willingness to acquire this knowledge.

Meeting and event chairing.

Significant experience in chairing meetings and events effectively is crucial.

Financial acumen.

Expertise in financial management and a comprehensive understanding of charity finance issues are necessary.

Knowledge of the civil society sector.

The Chair should possess a broad understanding of the Civil Society sector and be aware of current issues affecting it.

Commercial.

Experience in identifying and leveraging opportunities, forging strategic partnerships, and driving business growth as the Charity seeks to grow and scale its operations.

Length of appointment.

The Chair (and board members) serve a three-year term to be eligible for re-appointment for one additional term. In addition to chairing the main Board meetings, the Chair can attend and be part of the four sub-committees, which all meet quarterly where appropriate.
