Role Description – Chief Executive Officer

Salary: Circa £130,000
Location: Hybrid / London

NPC is a think tank and consultancy that focuses on social impact. We work with any organisation that is seeking to maximise social impact in the lives of the people they serve. This includes charities, foundations, philanthropists, impact investors, social enterprises, corporates, and the public sector.

We want to help organisations achieve better social Impact for the people and communities they serve through innovation, influence, and improvement.

  • Innovate: We develop innovative approaches and new resources, focusing especially on how digital and data can enable organisation to maximise impact.
  • Influence: We use our data, voice, and convening power to influence organisations thinking and to put the sector and social inequalities higher in the minds of policy makers, with deep dives into specific areas.
  • Improve: We provide the tools and resources to enable organisations to work as efficiently and effectively as possible, making best use of their funding, as well as urging and embedding more evidence-led impactful practice throughout the organisation.

Current priorities

We are looking for a new leader who can build on the successful impact and influence that NPC has developed in the charity sector while also developing NPC into a self-funding organisation by maximising the potential from its successful consulting work  and expanding into new sectors (impact investing, corporate foundations, philanthropists). This will require a good understanding of the social/charity sector combined with proven experience in maximising consulting and business development into new sectors.

Position Responsibilities

Executive Leadership and General Management

  • Provide thoughtful and visionary executive leadership that is inclusive, transparent, and empowering in a manner that supports and guides the NPC’s mission as agreed by the Board of Trustees
  • Present strategic options and plans for organisational impact and gain Board approval as needed to deliver the NPC mission
  • Provide leadership on addressing diversity, equality and inclusion issues in the work of NPC
  • Develop the strategic plan and drive its implementation
  • Establish goals, objectives, and operational plans in collaboration with the Board of Trustees, senior managers and staff
  • Apply innovative thinking and performance measurement to analyse and support strategic decision-making
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations as well as ensuring NPC’s overall long-term success and sustainability
  • Manage and motivate staff, ensuring all processes from recruitment to ongoing staff development, performance management, and compensation and benefits meet legal requirements and are in-line with diversity, equality and inclusion (DEI) principles
  • Organise, motivate, and mentor team leaders to strategically grow NPC’s impact, programs, fundraising, and to effectively fulfil its important mission
  • Continually foster a culture that encourages collaboration across the organisation, identifies necessary skills and values positive contributions from all staff
  • Inspire a business-oriented, professional, results-driven environment across the organisation

Fundraising and Business Development 

  • Lead an ambitious approach to the future development and sustainability of NPC, providing personal leadership and regularly assessing opportunities, competition and risk, looking widely across sectors to maximise impact
  • Provide strategic guidance and fundraising leadership in collaboration with the Director and senior team, assessing performance and skills and ensuring the development of opportunities to ensure objectives efficiently and effectively met,
  • Ensure NPC has a robust approach with early identification of issues and risks, making timely adjustments as required
  • Actively engage and lead on key fundraising relationships and help nurture new funding partners, working closely with the Board and supporters
  • Initiate, cultivate, and extend relationships with the NPC’s portfolio of individual, foundation, and corporate supporters

External Relations and Communications

  • Represent NPC and serve as chief spokesperson publicly at events, conferences, strategic meetings with potential funders, government and partners meetings
  • Present and promote NPC’s mission, values, programs, partners, and members in a consistently positive manner
  • Ensure high visibility of the core mission of NPC amongst potential funders, stakeholders and the social sector, specifically building interest in engaged philanthropy
  • Oversee the management of all aspects of the organisation’s marketing, communications and public relations
  • Influence thinking around policy in the social sector, challenge convention and seek new solutions.

Board Governance

  • Maintain regular and ongoing communication to build strong relationships with the entire Board, providing leadership and support to trustees
  • Communicate effectively with the Board by providing trustees with all information necessary to continually function properly and make informed decisions in a timely and accurate manner
  • Attend all Board meetings and provide reports and updates on staff as well as all current work, project timelines, and project and organisational progress
  • Work closely with the Chair to build consensus, develop strategic priorities and focus on outstanding deliverables
  • Implement Board policies and procedures and build support for Board decisions amongst staff
  • Work closely and openly with the Board and any Board committees, ensuring ongoing communication of risks, issues, as well as successes

Financial Management and Administration

  • Ensure the organisation’s financial stability and sustainability by working for a healthy cash flow, a reasonable surplus for reinvestment and adequate reserves
  • Provide strategic leadership, working closely with the Chief Operating Officer to ensure effective management for all the administrative, human resources, IT and operational functions of NPC
  • Prudently direct resources and manage all financials within budget guidelines and according to current laws and regulations
  • Assume responsibility for the fiscal integrity and viability of the organisation
  • Monitor board-approved budget and ensure effective management of daily financial operations to ensure maximum utilisation of resources and optimum financial positioning for the organisation
  • Ensure maximum resource utilization, budget management, and maintenance of NPC in a sustainable financial position
  • Ensure that the annual budget is well developed and given Board approval
