Job Title: Director of Strategy and Impact

Reporting to: Chief Executive

Hours: Full Time

Key Relationships: NHS Charities Together Staff Team, Members, NHSCT Trustees, internal and external stakeholders.

Location: Hybrid working available

Reward Package: £75,000-£90,000 annual salary plus 10% pension contribution and 28 days annual leave, non-pay benefits

Overall Purpose

The Board and the Chief Executive of NHS Charites Together are seeking a talented, seasoned and strategic senior leader to join the charity at this critical and exciting stage of our growth and development. Following an extraordinary public response to our national appeal in 2020, over the last 2 years we have grown to be one of the top 10 funders in the country. The Director of Strategy and Impact will be central to our ambition to further develop and implement our brand new organisational strategy for 2022- 2026, and develop a performance and impact focussed culture among a group of diverse, talented individuals and member organisations.

Reporting to the Chief Executive (CEO), the Director of Strategy and Impact will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for all NHS Charities Together strategic partnerships and programmes, including our diverse membership of NHS charities as well as our current and future grants programme. We are looking for someone with vision and a track record in leading the development and implementation of strategic workstreams; enabling greatest impact with our member charities for the NHS staff, volunteers and their patients whom we seek to benefit. In addition, the Director of Strategy and Impact will liaise with internal and external partners, working with the CEO, the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and the Board of NHS Charities Together to keep them abreast of programmatic strategies, challenges and opportunities.

The Director of Strategy and Impact will work alongside the CEO and the SLT to make our vision, mission and philosophy of how we work a reality. With lead responsibility for ensuring the impact of all NHS Charities Together programmes and partnerships, they will lead NHS Charities Together strategic planning process and will develop and put into effect new initiatives as well as hold responsibility for developing, implementing, and managing the operational membership and impact aspects of the annual budget.

The role will require the postholder to utilise their skills, sensitivity and personal confidence and entrepreneurial spirit to tap into the power that each member of their team brings to their work and in their contribution to our overall mission. While it is essential that the Director of Strategy and Impact brings efficient and effective systems to increase the productivity of the organisation, is it also critical that the team retain the creative spark that drives NHS Charities Together’s success.

More specifically, the Director of Strategy and Impact will be responsible for:

Strategic leadership and management

  • Work as part of the NHS Charities Together senior leadership team using a whole system strategic approach; demonstrating a commitment to inclusion, diversity, and equality of opportunities across the entire organisation; developing the capabilities and infrastructure of NHS Charities Together to support its ambitious plans.
  • Work collaboratively with the Chief Executive and the Senior Leadership Team helping to realise our vision, deliver our ambitious strategy providing professional and people leadership for the organisation, helping to establish a vibrant culture to ensure NHS Charities Together achieves its organisational objectives.
  • Work in partnership with the CEO and other members of the Senior Leadership Team, providing expert advice and solutions on strategic and tactical issues facing the charity.
  • Represent NHS Charities Together externally helping to grow the brand, its reputation and impact.
  • Provide effective, inclusive and inspiring leadership by being actively engaged with all programmes and services, developing a broad and deep knowledge of all membership and impact programmes and partnerships
  • Recruit, lead, coach, develop, and retain NHS Charities Tog ether’s high-performance strategy and impact team with an emphasis on developing capacity in strategic analysis, planning, monitoring and evaluation, and programme budgeting.
  • Identify opportunities for NHS Charities Together to leverage cross-programme strengths to take advantage of new opportunities and/or to address organisational challenges to deliver greater impact for the charity and members.
  • Implement and lead a continuous quality improvement process throughout our programmes and services, focusing on systems/process improvement. Ensure regular and ongoing opportunities for all staff to provide feedback on membership and impact programmes and partnership operations.
  • Establish and build relationships with key external stakeholders, working in partnership with others where appropriate and using stakeholder feedback and intelligence to guide and inform the priorities and implementation of the Impact functions.

Strategic performance and impact

  • Work closely with the CEO and the Board as part of the Senior Leadership Team to ensure that our ambitious and innovative vision and strategy is effectively developed, implemented and then embedded across the entire organisation.
  • Lead the management of strategic reviews, planning processes, organisational reporting and impact analysis, working with the SLT to identify future activities to be supported, scaled up or stopped in line with NHS Charities Together strategic objectives and changes in the external environment.
  • Establish business development and operational planning capabilities across membership services; providing insights and impact to identify new areas of growth and innovation for the organisation.
  • Lead, develop and oversee the effective use of data dashboards that drive organisational effectiveness and insights.
  • Work with the Senior Leadership Team to ensure the right platforms, systems, processes and resources are in place to ensure our strategic objectives are delivered successfully.
  • Provide expertise, set standards, and guide colleagues and external evaluation teams on the design and development of measures, metrics and data systems which will enable us to deliver our goal of being a data driven, evidence based organisation.

Finance and governance

  • Prepare and manage the annual operational budget. Ensuring the fiscal viability across all programme areas remains robust.
  • To adhere to relevant legislation, best practice, policies and processes including but not limited to, charity law, the fundraising regulator, the ICO, GDPR and professional codes and standards.

Programme Responsibilities:

NHS Charity Membership

  • To ensure all NHS Charities Together membership opportunities and services are accessible to all and representative of our values. They must be of the highest quality, inclusive, and overall demonstrate and celebrate diversity in all its forms.
  • Provide senior leadership support, direction and insights to the enable the NHS charity sector to be high performing, impactful and add great value to their NHS bodies and beneficiaries.
  • To ensure that NHS Charities Together programmes and partnerships reflect and support membership needs enabling them to deliver greater impact.
  • To ensure that learning from monitoring and the evaluation of our programmes, partnerships and grants supports the overall strategic development of our membership programme.

Ideas, Partnerships and Programmes

  • To lead and support the development of ideas, programmes and partnerships that advance our mission and key strategic objectives.
  • To champion and demonstrate a commitment to equality of opportunities and a collaborative approach in all areas of the NHS Charities Together innovation, programmes, partnerships our organisational culture.

Grant making

  • To lead, develop and implement a sustainable long-term grant making strategy for the organisation, ensuring it is aligned to our new 5 year vision and strategy, addresses member needs, champions the wellbeing of NHS staff, volunteers and patients, and delivers greater impact throughout the NHS and its wider communities.
  • To support the work of the CEO, Trustees, and sub committees to ensure robust governance and assurance frameworks exist in all grant making activities nationally (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales).
  • To ensure robust and transparent grant distribution, management, monitoring and evaluation systems and processes are in place to make sure our grant making is accessible, accountable, and impactful.

Insights, Evaluation and Learning

  • Build capacity and capability in our Impact Assessment team and the NHS charity sector.
  • Ensure we are evidence led through our insights work, and effectively monitor, evaluate and learn from our membership, programmes and partnerships, particularly our grants programmes. This includes guiding research, investigation, data collection & analysis with internal and external data to build case studies, reports, convenings, or other relevant materials to showcase our work and that of the sector to a range of external stakeholders and partners.
  • Develop data and impact partnerships with a broad range of external organisations.
  • Work with the Director of Communications and External lead on the development of stories, impact statements, and engagement strategies demonstrating the difference that NHS Charities Together and our members make.
  • Contribute to NHS Charities Together long-term sustainability by working with the Director of Fundraising to develop compelling cases for support, funder reports, proposals, engagement strategies, and identification of new funding opportunities.

This is not meant to be an exhaustive list of duties. The willing and flexible approach  is required. We are currently a small team, and the post holder is expected to carry out any other related duties that are within the employee’s skills and abilities whenever reasonably instructed.

Key Relationships

  • The Chief Executive, Senior Leadership Team, Operations team and the wider staff team in support of the overall objectives of NHS Charities Together.
  • NHS Charities Together Trustees – particularly within sub-committees related to member services, impact and grants
  • Liaison with 200 + member charities and their staff teams.
  • External stakeholders at all levels including senior national leaders

Terms and Conditions:

Working Hours – Full time – 35 hours per week (negotiable)
Pension – 10% employer contribution
Annual Leave – 28 days per annum (pro rata) plus bank holidays
Probation Period – 6 months (for external appointments)
Notice Period – 1 week during probation & 2 months thereafter
