Welcome

Thank you for your interest in becoming the Independent Member of the Audit and Risk Committee at The National Archives. We are delighted that you are considering joining this unique organisation.

The National Archives is at a transformative moment in its history. Our Vision is that by 2038 we will be the living digital archive of the state, and we will shortly be publishing our new four-year strategy. Our priorities for the next four years are:

  • Lead the future of archives
  • Increase our profile
  • Widen availability and reshape place
  • Renew our technology

The National Archives is a source of information and inspiration, of evidence and experiences. The power of encounters with the physical archive and the utility of digital and digitised records are both squarely at the heart of our vision for the living digital archive.

At the heart of our mission is the need to secure the future of the record – of government and the courts and in the wider archives sector – while also supporting and learning from our global peers as we seek to tackle the same challenges.

There are new and rapidly developing threats to our security and resilience as an information organisation that we need to understand and counter. The emergence of new technologies, including artificial intelligence, will also make possible genuine, game-changing transformation for The National Archives and the people we serve.

To achieve our ambitions, we will continue to need advice, support and challenge from a strong and capable Audit and Risk Committee. The Independent Member of the Audit and Risk Committee will play a vital role in shaping The National Archives’ ability to understand and navigate the increasingly complex landscape in which we work.

Your professional experience, in particular your board-level financial experience, will help ensure that The National Archives benefits from strong, effective oversight and responsible governance..

If you have the experience, enthusiasm and skills to help us reach our goals, we are keen to hear from you.

Chair of The National Archives’ Board
